Set on 2 acres of land with native trees and plants, staying with us is an authentic country experience. Sweet potato capital of the world, Sunset, Louisiana is a convenient hub to explore the Acadiana region or relax on our serene property. The room is similar to a private, second story apartment, but without a full kitchen. It has its own exterior entrance (PLEASE MIND YOUR HEAD ON THE TREE BRANCHES), bathroom, refrigerator, microwave, coffee pot, plates and utensils. It should be noted that the single bed is a trundle bed and is low to the ground. The trundle bed is not made ready unless requested. Please make sure you state if you will need it when making your booking. The room receives a lot of shade from the big live oak tree that grows over it, under which you can swing in the hammock, sit on the front porch or in the garden. There is a small collection of vinyls featuring some classic Zydeco, Cajun and New Orleans musicians, as well as a few books for your pleasure. The room has a rustic/funky/southwest feel and is full of homemade or refurbished furniture. Dave is a master carpenter, so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. Our property is best suited for guests seeking the peace of the countryside, and a unique look at small town Louisiana life. It is also a convenient hub for exploring Acadiana: Lafayette is 20 minutes away, Mamou and Fred's Lounge is 30, Bayou Teche Brewery is 10, Opelousas is 7, historic Gran Coteau is 5, and of course Sunset is only a bike ride or short walk down the road. We have lived here our whole lives and can recommend interesting places to visit, where to eat, canoe at state parks, take scenic drives, see music (or an alligator!) and more. Guests are welcome to use the whole garden and backyard. There is a fire pit and bbq pit for use as well. There is also access to a laundry room if you need to wash clothes. This house is quirky as you will find out if you stay with us. It's our lifelong project, one that changes a bit each year. Dave the Welshman can be found in his workshop most days. He's always up for a chat and can offer good insight into the history of the region. Suzanne the Cajun works weekdays and almost always comes home with a good story to tell. Due to the unique layout of the house, guests can have as much or as little interaction as they like. Just ring the bell, cher! As mentioned earlier, Sunset is a small town, but it is growing each year. We have a thriving arts and antique scene with shops like Bayou Some Stuff, Funky Flea and Remember When. There are a few restaurants: the very popular Cafe Josephine, the staple Little Mexico, Cajun Rizz for boiled crawfish and more and the Donut Palace. Just outside the "center" and you can visit the local grocery market or go to Subway. You can walk or ride a bike to Grand Coteau (3 miles), which is a charming town with old cajun houses, beautiful oak alleys, a cafe and a historic girls school, Sacred Heart Academy. Just a little farther and you can grab a drink or watch music at the Bike Barn, grab some boudin at Don's, or head to famous Prejean's for a seafood platter. A little further out, in Arnaudville is the Bayou Teche brewery with award winning micro-brews,tours and tastings Our house is about 1 mile from the town "center" and you can borrow a bike from us or take a leisurely stroll. There is plenty of room for parking on the property. Things to do in the area: 1. Canoe with gators at Lake Martin, Chicot State Park or Fausse Point. 2. Take a ride through the country to visit Bayou Teche Brewery and try a local beer. 3. Go to a classic Zydeco club in Opelousas like Slim's Y-Ki-Ki, or a cajun bar like the infamous Fred's Lounge in Mamou. 4. Visit the historic a charming towns of Washington or Grand Coteau. 5. FESTIVALS!: - Mardi Gras - Festival International - Festival Acadian - Boudin Festival - Crawfish Fest - etc. And just ask us about places to eat and where else to listen to live music.
