This cabin-like house is bursting with character, with its open ceiling and wood beams, nautical teak ladder to a large loft, and a location nestled in woods of spruce and fir. It's only 2 miles to the village, most of Acadia's "quietside" trailheads, and the very best swimming spot on the island. Good internet and dedicated workspace in the loft make this a great option for those seeking to work remotely in a beautiful place for the summer, or for any couple looking for a cozy getaway. The shingled saltbox cape has an open living room/dining room, with the small kitchen in an “L” off this space. It's not fancy, but it is cheerful, cozy and comfortable, and it is classic Maine. Large nearly floor-to-ceiling windows across the length of the front of the house face south, letting lots sunlight pour in, yet the wooded location keeps the house cool even on hot days. There is a large deck off the back of the house with a picnic table and propane grill, and this not-very-buggy (not claiming it's entirely bug-free!) location allows full enjoyment of these amenities! If it's the right time, you can catch the moon rising up from between the trees from the back deck. There is no cable, satellite, or other TV service, but there is a TV screen with a firewire to which you can hook up a laptop if you desire to stream anything on a somewhat larger screen. There is also a DVD player with a very small collection of DVDs. A ladder leads to a large loft that is great as a workout space and/or an office. There is a large desk in the loft that provides a dedicated workspace for those looking to work remotely. I will give you a code for the keypad to let yourself in, and you will have the house to yourself for the duration of your stay. As an author of an Acadia hiking guide and explorer of Acadia's trails since a toddler, I am happy to provide you with hiking suggestions based on your desires and abilities in advance of your trip. The house is located on the "Quietside" of Mount Desert Island, home of Acadia National Park. The house sits among the trees in a quiet residential area. It is not entirely off on its own, the neighbors are visible from the house. The grocery store is a short walk away through the woods (or an almost-as-short drive around on the roads!) The center of Southwest Harbor's village is two miles away, and offers some nice restaurants, an ice-cream shop, gifts shops, and other essentials like the post office and hardware store, all located on its charming Main Street. The trailhead for Acadia Mountain, also the location of the path down to Echo Lake Cliffs (the best swimming spot on the island IMO!) is just two miles up the road, and easily bikeable on the wide shoulders of Route 102. Flying Mountain and Valley Cove are a mile away around the corner, and many other of Acadia's trailheads within a couple miles as well. Bar Harbor is a just a scenic 20 minute drive away, with all its restaurants, shops, and access to other points in Acadia such as the Park Loop Road. Acadia National Park's Island Explorer free bus will be running this summer through October. It is a great way to get around between Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor, the Park Loop, trailheads, and all Acadia's attractions. There are also local taxi services available. A new washer and dryer were installed in September, 2023.
