Private, lockable, ocean-view studio in quiet, beachy subdivision. Dark and quiet at night. Spectacular views. Secluded beach and snorkeling bay, 2 mins away, at bottom of hill. This is a legal "hosted" rental under the new county ordinance.

My place is great for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach that's still in the West side tropical zone... but seek a setting well away from the retail, heat, tourists and bustle of Kailua town.

Welcome to South Kona, Big Island of Hawaii! I offer a private, ocean-view studio on the garden level of a single-family home in a beachy, rural subdivision/community comprised of interesting custom homes. (Note: This is a "hosted" rental under the new county ordinance.) This space is separate and lockable from the main house and has a private entrance via a side staircase. This is not a luxury resort room, nor should you expect it to be. It's a cozy, well-equipped studio space part of a home in a mature, family neighborhood. Not fancy, but it is very homey and very comfy. We are on a self-sustaining rainwater catchment system here, so mindful water conservation is requested and appreciated. Sleeps two guests max. I can take parties of--(a) one adult; (b) two adults; or (c) one adult and one older child.

This is a legal "Hosted" rental, per new county regulations.

No streetlights, no highway noise, no frogs and NO chickens. Just crashing surf (in winter).

Our own secluded, uncrowded, black-pebble beach and bay and nearby black-sand beach offers easy access to outstanding snorkeling, kayaking, diving, fishing and swimming. The north finger reef is home to astounding snorkeling. Dramatic pinnacles dotted with coralheads teem with zillions of colorful tropical reef fish and other creatures. Unlike beaches in town, it's very uncrowded here most days and you will probably have the whole beach to yourself. :) The beach is about two minutes' drive away via a crazy steep road. You can walk it-- but driving is recommended.

This property is located at mile marker 97 in South Kona; about 45 minutes from Kailua-Kona and about 25 minutes from the actual town of Captain Cook.

Spacious, cozy, clean, comfortable studio outfitted with all you need to ensure an easygoing pleasant stay. NEW: Ultra-luxurious, certified organic King mattress by Nest Bedding with topper on brand new platform. (A recent guest called this a "rockstar" bed. ) Also, pleasant cement patio outside: a picnic table, gas tabletop BBQ for grilling up that great island fish or island-grown beef. Coffeemaker, microwave and hotplate available. Patio chairs and table also outside.

Please note: This is a setting quite off the beaten track, so if you are looking to walk to nightlife, convenience stores or Starbux, this location is NOT the place. If you want to see canopies of stars, hear birds and whales and the crashing surf, and be near premier, uncrowded snorkeling, well, that's more like us. Most guests love our rural location for just these reasons. At night, it's a safe, peaceful, quiet, dark, breezy and simply gorgeous out here. (Be sure when booking that this description fits your needs. We are not fancy!)

Our quiet subdivision is stair-stepped onto the dramatic, steep slopes of Mauna Loa, creating commanding, 180-degree panoramic ocean views. This affords us vistas all the way to Kailua town 25 miles to the north and at least 10 miles to the south. Clear horizon lines run 45 miles straight out to sea. Sunsets are extraordinary experiences on this part of the island, especially at our location and elevation, and now that the volcano has stopped--the air is the clearest in decades. You feel like you are on top of the world --yet still close to the beach. Our leeward (Kona means "lee" or calm) side of the island is characterized by mostly dry, sunny weather year round, with a light increase in rain in the summer months. Average year-round temp is 80 degrees. Perfect.

In winter, we can hear the raucous humpback whales from up here (November through April). Star-swept skies astonish. Cool elevation of about 750 feet means that ocean breezes keep us naturally comfortable all day, every day.

Summer conditions are calm and placid, ideal for snorkeling. (Although it can be a bit more rainy.) Winter ocean conditions can be rough at times, interspersed with many calm days.

The beach right below us is a sweet pebble cove and protected bay. Snorkeling along the finger reefs here (in calm conditions) is excellent. Our beach is a TRUE best-kept secret. Shore divers love this area, also known for its abundant sealife, startling pinnacles and breathtaking coral gardens. (The Kona Aggressor dive charter parks just to the north of our bay.) The diving companies are charging $150 just to drive their customers to our bay, that's how pristine it is! Kayaking is premier and it's easy to launch (in calm conditions) from our paved beach parking lot.

Hiking along the ancient King's Trail or walk even farther north and reach a gorgeous, secluded black sand beach with a private shower and surrounded by coco palms.

Free use of my snorkeling equipment (with signed waiver). Note: I provide snorkel gear as a courtesy only-- so fit, size, condition and quality of gear is NOT guaranteed in any way. You may want to consider renting, bringing or buying your own if you want to ensure a perfect fit. You must be a good swimmer to snorkel! There's also a beach umbrella, beach cooler, two chairs, loaner surfwear, noodles, beach towels and beachmats. There's a hot plate for making simple meals.

Free, reliable and fast Wi-Fi. Furniture includes brand new organic king size platform bed from Nest Bedding, end tables, dining table and chairs, sitting chairs and lamps, two dropleaf tables, two armoires for storage. Several lamps. Small dresser. Futon couch. Basic 19-inch flat screen/DVD player with a few good movies and a few B or C movies. :) There's also an acoustic guitar with new strings and picks in the room available to borrow free if you are a musician.

Enjoy often spectacular sunsets in the evenings, amidst the sounds of hundreds of roosting mynah birds, (depending on the time of year). It's tranquil and dark out here... a great location to experience the real vibe of Authentic Kona, Hawaii.

In short, South Kona is home to a great variety of different beaches and attractions all within minutes.

Your hosts in the main house (upstairs) are friendly, longtime Hawaii Island residents with a Maltese dog and grumpy-faced cat. (These pets will never be inside your rental. ) I really take pride in helping visitors make the most of their short visit to Hawaii Island. So please, ask your questions!

We are approx. 23 miles south of Kailua-Kona, about an hour south of the airport. With the new bypass open, we are under 30 minutes to Keauhou Bay.

HEADING NORTH: We are 15 minutes south of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (the best preserved cultural refuge and ancient temple complex in the state) and "Two-Step," featuring outstanding snorkeling, said to be among the top three in the state. Twenty minutes from world- famous Kealakekua Bay--a pristine bay and protected marine reserve/underwater park great for swimming, dolphin sightings and whale-watching. Ten minutes to beautiful, sandy Hookena Beach where you can rent a kayak. Five minutes to the famed coffee belt of the Honaunau Valley.

It's about 12 miles north to the town of Captain Cook, with services such as gasoline, restaurants, grocery and banking. It's 45 minutes to Kailua if you DO want some nightlife, dining, bigbox retailers, sportfishing, golf, luaus or tennis.

HEADING SOUTH: We are about one hour and 25 minutes to the phenomenal Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with (currently) two live eruption sites. Punalu'u Black Sand beach, with an abundance of sunbathing turtles, is about 45 minutes south as are turnoffs for the Green Sands Beach and South Point. (A paved 12-mile access road takes you to within hiking distance of these spots.)

My place is great for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach that's still in the West side tropical zone... but seek a setting well away from the retail, heat, tourists and bustle of Kailua town.

NOTE: Food, and other provisions are the responsibility of the guest and are not provided. Please buy for your tastes and preferences.

Renting a car for mobility and convenience sake is mandatory.

No minimum required stay except during the holidays and peak season. I cannot accept short stays in advance in the peak season (November through April.) Four night min. required. Winter rates then are higher. Ironman week is higher. Christmas week must be booked as a 7-day minimum block. Same with New Year's week. (Restrictions apply to these two peak weeks. Please ask. I also request that you have trip insurance for holiday bookings.)

I must collect Hawaii excise (4.43%) and accommodation tax (10.25 %) for a total of 14.689% on your booking, (except on the security deposit, which is refundable. ) The collection of tax is mandatory and non negotiable. My license is on display in the room. The state thanks you.

PAYMENT/BOOKING REQUIREMENTS. All bookings are prepaid and non-refundable. Guests will be asked to sign and return a standard rental agreement and will be required to submit government ID upon booking and to show the same ID and sign in upon arrival. Payment through Venmo, Paypal or other agreed-upon means. (International guests will incur any international surcharges on payment method.)

IN CLOSING: Let's make sure it's a fit. I'm only interested in hosting self-sufficient guests who are quiet, courteous and respectful and who desire a peaceful, rural location. We are not a fancy resort and do not offer maid service during your stay. Do read the listing completely and house rules carefully BEFORE BOOKING to make sure it's a fit for you. Please be aware that while we take every precaution to prevent insects from entering the flat, one or two might make it inside as they do in all homes in Hawaii. They are harmless and easy to remove. Just let us know immediately and we'll take care of any unwanted visitors. Also: Geckos are a normal part of life in Hawaii. They are very curious and completely harmless.

If my long ramble has not answered all your questions, write with ANY and ALL questions about the place, location or its amenities, and I'd be glad to answer!

Mahalo! and e komo mai! (Welcome).

I will email you the detailed guest info. I've hosted guests from around the world and enjoy introducing them to this wonderful spot. :)

Feedback to you

Thank you for the great time in South Kona Studio! We enjoyed especially the snorkel stuff and the books about Hawaii. The Studio is really nice!

“Quiet and cozy suite near fantastic snorkelling” Five stars

Reviewed 2 weeks ago for a stay in January 2018

Our stay in South Kona was so nice, and Kristina was very welcoming and gave us excellent suggestions on what to do and see nearby. The best snorkelling of our trip was at the pebble beach at the end of the street - far more colourful fish and far less people than you could ever hope for! Overall it was a lovely stay and even just hanging out on the patio watching geckos and birds was a relaxing option.

Would I recommend this vacation rental to my best friend? Yes.
