The Bali Hut is a beautiful hand carved building done in Indonesia, located on a half acre, surrounded by palm trees and tropical gardens. Sleeping in the hut is a unique and peaceful experience, you will fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and crashing of waves in the distance. The Bali hut is located within walking distance of the ocean and black sand beach. Cabin/ antique Bali Hut in beautiful Hawaii on one half acre with ocean views on the Big island of Hawaii on the Puna coast, five minutes walking distance to the black sand beach where the dolphins swim and spin, whale watch in the winter months and play in the surf. My rental is just twenty minutes from Pahoa town where you will find many resturants and grocery and health food stores. This beautiful coastline is one of the most picturesque and oldest parts of Hawaii and the black sand beach is accessible for good walkers and good swimmers to enjoy. This coastline road is perfect for a bicycle ride to explore this beautiful paradise's hidden treasures. The lava has stopped now and its a beautiful and safe time to experience the wonders of this transformation including a new black sand beach and tide pools. The Volcano National Park is now open for viewing in many areas. This hut was hand carved in East Timor, Indonesia, sixty years ago and is free standing, open aired, screened with privacy mesh shades. The Bali house is quiet and peaceful, you will sleeping in the comfort of a queen size bed,listening to the sound of ocean surf and swaying palm trees and jungle noises. The bathroom and outdoor hot shower are separate from the house and very private, surrounded by trees and plants, their is a privacy fence on the border. Please note that because of the short walk to the shower and bathroom, the steps of the Bali hut and the walk could be a problem for guests that are elderly or have walking problems. The shower is not visible to my home or neighbors. NO COOKING FACILITIES are available, a coffee maker is provided if you wish to bring coffee and other things for your coffee. PLEASE NOTE, NO FOOD SHOULD BE STORED IN THE HUT OR IN YOUR SUIT CASES AND PACKS. A COOLER IS PROVIDED UNDER THE HUT FOR FOOD STORAGE AND FROZEN WATER BOTTLES ARE PROVIDED IS YOU WISH. PLEASE PUT ALL TRASH OUTSIDE OR ON MY PORCH FOR DISPOSAL, MAHALO. Please note this is a non-smoking home and grounds (no exceptions please) in a very quiet neighborhood. Wi Fi is available. Please note although I provide wi fi, it is not city fast but usually pretty consistent. Also their is no cell phone reception on the property but is available down the road. The Kapoho Kalapana Road, also known as the Red Road, travels along the coastline of the lower Puna district on the Big Island. It is one of the most scenic roads in the state of Hawaii. Yet only a few visitors have discovered it. Located in a remote and sparsely populated area (southeast of Pahoa village), this road takes you along some of the most spectacular scenery reminiscent of the old Hawaii of yesteryear. It used to be paved with red cinder gravels, now it is paved with black asphalt, but local residents still affectionately call it the Red Road. The road follows the rugged coastline, sometimes it curves so close to the edge of the cliff that you could see the crashing waves below, sometimes it burrows through a dense tree tunnel where dangling jungle vines would touch the roof of your car! The road takes you through rocky lava fields, lush coconut groves, tropical rain forests, black sand beaches, beautiful bays and peaceful ocean side resting places, and a few quaint residential neighborhoods. This winding one-lane road is barely wide enough for cars to pass each other. Look for colorful patches of wild impatiens along the roadside and whimsical wind-sculpted trees that remind you of a Tolkien fantasy novel! You may also encounter a few fishermen fishing by the surf's edge or an artist painting under the shade of a mango tree or if you’re really lucky, a hula halau practicing en plein air at a roadside park where dancers dance to some beautiful and timeless Hawaiian love songs. The road has been shortened now due to the lava flow but large parts of it are accessible from both ends of the Bali hut and is still very beautiful and magical. My guests love to experience Uncle Robert's Awa bar with a large and welcoming Wednesday night art, music and food music market. The food, music and hula are the best on the island and guests love to dance to Uncle's Awa band as well. Also, just across the road from the market is a wonderful walk to the new black sand beach that was formed after the 1990 lava flow. The sunset and lava glow are quite beautiful from this area. The Bali hut is about one hour or less from Hilo, travelling on Highway 11 towards Pahoa town and connects to highway 130 that travels to the ocean road, also called the red road and a two lane road will lead you directly to the Bali hut. No hotel or gas station along the road (and no cell phone service either!) so fill up your car and get food/water in Pahoa village before heading down to the coastline. Once you are settled you can experience the rest of the red road with a leisure drive. Drive slow, it’s a narrow and winding road. If another car wants to pass (from behind or in opposite direction), pull your car over to the side to yield. Pack a lunch. There are many spots along the road where you can stop and have a picnic with a breathtaking view! Look for dolphins and sea turtles in the water or may be a rainbow in the sky. Look also for self-serve fruit stands by the roadside to buy fresh delicious avocado, papaya, mango, or banana. Bring your camera and a good pair of binoculars Relax and Enjoy The Red Road Whether you visit the Red Road in the morning, afternoon, or at night, you’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience. If you're on the Red Road early in the morning, you will catch the dramatic sunrise on the makai (towards the sea) side as the sun comes up from under the blue ocean. It’s also the best time to spot spinner dolphins frolicking in some calm shallow coves. In late afternoon, as the sun sinks behind the rain forest on the mauka (towards the mountain) side, you will get to witness a magical light show: golden rays of sunlight, highlighted by sea spray mist, radiating all over the road through tree branches. The night sky is now light up with the red glow from the lava and is quite beautiful to view. However, if there is a full moon, the Red Road can take on a charming and nostalgic look. The gleaming ocean surface reflects the bright moon on the sky. The surf pounding against the rocky shoreline becomes so intensely white. Night fishermen gather around a campfire, playing their ukulele and sharing "talk story". You might see a pueo fly across the road. Pueo, our beautiful white owel is considered to be a sacred guardian in Hawaiian culture, so feel safe and blessed if you see one. Io's our hawks are also and extra blessing when viewed. As you drive along, listen to the chirping sound of coqui frogs everywhere. Listen carefully, you might also hear the soulful singing of a humpback whale echoing through the night under the moonlight. Humpback whales come to the warm waters of Hawaii during the winter months to give birth and breed. You can see and hear them from the Red Road even at night. I am very social with my guests if they wish any information or guidance on their trip. I am always available to them when they need assistance or need anything to make them more comfortable. I strongly suggest that you book three nights, most guests arrive late the first night and only have the next day to see this wonderful side of the island. My neighborhood is peaceful and very quiet, lots of beautiful plants to see on a neighborhood walk. My backyard is beautiful for plants and star gazing. My neighborhood is also very safe, I do have an office if you wish to lock up any valuables. Parking is available in my driveway, safe and secure. I strongly urge my guests to rent a car, their is a public bus but it only runs twice a day and does not make it easy to view the sites here. Please remember my Bali hut is less than one hour from Hilo Airport and three hours or less from the Kona airport. The Bali hut is in total commune with nature, you can see the plants surrounding the hut, hear the ocean, listen to jungle noises ( sometimes loud) watch the birds fly by, the hut is screened and has privacy mesh shades and with the trees and plants, gives you total privacy. This is the same for the outdoor shower. You will also see our beautiful dancing geko's on the ceiling that are completely harmless, my guests love them and I do also. Please note that the bathroom is separate from the Bali hut and would not be suitable for guests that having walking issues in the day or night and the Bali hut has three steps that could be difficult for someone elderly or with walking difficulties.
