Unique nature setting on a 54 acre ecological art project 15 minutes from Bowling Green and next to a large Mennonite community. As of 2023, this project is in year 15 of succession and is a place we attempt to share with people who have a demonstrated interest in nature and who value diversity generally in all systems of the world. It's a relaxed atmosphere, great for trail walking, bird watching, as well as biking or sightseeing in the large Mennonite community positioned just south. The main space is a stream-side campsite located along a manicured trail about 1/8 mile from parking. The camp has a fire-pit, black locust log seats, and a tent equipped with queen and twin-sized mattresses, fitted with sheets and pillows. There is also a slot for a camper-van, near the road entrance located under a shaded canopy of sassafras, cedar, maple, and staghorn sumac trees, a few paces from an outdoor shower equipped with an outlet to fill water, wash dishes, or a vehicle. This location is the same distance from Nashville as when traveling from Bowling Green (along peaceful backgrounds rather than I-65), and along the direct shortest route toward Knoxville (again along smaller roads). Inquire if traveling with a personal tent and in need of a blank campsite or desire to backcountry camp for modified rates. A key ecological feature of this land is a vernal wetland, which themselves are rare in Kentucky (and in general). These ephemeral pools are filled with water only part of the year, endowing them with unique ecological benefits to the surrounding areas. As appreciated more every year during the various phases of succession from the starting point of this project (cattle pasture land), the vernal wetland powers a broad area and is a focal point of life, diversity, and vigor in the area. Visit during the spring and early summer to watch migrating birds (e.g. Great White Egrets), to hear barn owls overhead, or to experience the heyday of frogs, the latter of which can easily drown out the sound of a car horn during audio captures. All throughout the year, there is something interesting to observe at the vernal wetland, either of 2 ponds, upland successional forests, grasslands and prairies. Outdoor shower with heated water and trail system. I will probably be working on the property on building or orchard projects, and available to answer questions or help however, as needed. Don't hesitate to ask for suggestions or help. This is a nature sanctuary in formation. At various times of the year, we will be harvesting raspberries, mulberries, blueberries, black raspberries, peaches, apples, pears, and blackberries. You are welcome to pick wild berries. Please carry out what you pack in and be respectful of the nature areas. This sanctuary sits on the edge of a Mennonite community, and in turn the campsite serves as a nice base from which to bike and kayak in an area somewhat removed from the modern era. Inquire about kayak rental, ferrying, and pickup. There are many craft and produce stores within the community, located south of this land, starting about 4 miles. If you can find one, they all have maps and could steer you to particulars (probably a dozen stands scattered about, often specializing in different bits). Outside of this 'plain people's' community, Scottsville is a short drive and has a library, exercise center (Core), and a grocery store with organic options (Food Lion). The Core is a YMCA type of facility and may provide free day access to out of state visitors. This project is part of an exploration for camp hosting as a form of nature conservation. Each time a site is booked, trails are mowed, trail pruning and maintenance is used to generate campfire wood.
