We are taking reservations! Nestled in the rolling hills of northeast Iowa in the quiet village of St. Donatus, the Gehlen House offers year-round accommodations for calming getaways and/or family fun. The property is on the National Register of Historical Places. Clervaux is one of six private bedrooms with shared kitchen and living room space. Guests can book single rooms or the whole house (see other listings under my profile). Kalmes Restaurant is across the street offers dining. The Gehlen House was established in 1848 by Peter Gehlen, an immigrant from Olm, Luxembourg. The house is built from native limestone quarried from the hills around the village of St. Donatus. Over the years the Gehlen House has served travelers and the community at large, having been a post office, a road-side tavern, and a doll museum. In it's current capacity, the Gehlen House is an inn, providing six private bedrooms with a shared living room, kitchen and upper deck. Clervaux is a corner bedroom with a queen bed and en suite bathroom with a shower. It has been recently updated and provides a beautiful room for your stay. A full breakfast is not provided (see more in guest access), but there are food items available and you will be able to make breakfast if you choose. Kalmes restaurant may be offering a full breakfast menu , but check for updates. Guests have private bedrooms with locks. All guests have access to the kitchen and living room shared areas. There is a small deck off the kitchen providing entry to the second floor. **The kitchen is a shared space that includes both a microwave and refrigerator. We ask that guests wash their hands prior to using these items to help with mitigating the potential spread of germs. Disinfecting wipes are also available in the kitchen. Most food items are individually packaged for our guests. We ask that our guests wash their dishware or use the disposable items provided. We do not live in the inn, but we are 5 minutes away. Upon reservation, you will be provided with additional contact information. We try to be available at check-in to get you settled in, but you may also choose to self-check upon arrival. We are generally on-site in the barn venue behind the inn Thursday through Sunday and we invite you to come and enjoy the cold craft beers from our brewery, or listen to the music we often have on the weekends. St. Donatus is a city in Jackson County, Iowa, United States. The population is 128 (2017) and consists of mostly families who have roots to the country of Luxembourg. St. Donatus is known for its status as a Luxembourger village, with historic architecture and views along U.S. Highway 52. Kalmes was originally a tavern, started in the 1850's, in the pink stucco house next the the Gehlen House.
