We are available to help you organize your excursions to Tikal (41 kms), Yaxhá (55 kms) and elsewhere as well as make reservations for your onward journey to Guatemala City, Belize, Mexico or Semuc Champey. San Pedro is our nearest village (700 mts). Inhabitants there are both Spanish speaking and Quecchí origen. The men work cultivating the land, and a few find jobs in construction or as watchmen. Very few women have jobs and most teenagers who wish to study need to help at home during the week and go to school at the weekend. It is a poor village but people are friendly and helpful and always willing to receive foreigners. The children are especially affectionate and open and love to chat or play games with visitors. If you are adventurous, staying long enough or traveling in a group, sharing your skills with the locals, specially the women and children, can be extremely rewarding (music, story-telling, games or sports, art work or needle work if you can bring the materials, are very successful. For those who are really solidary and wish to give up some of their holiday time there are larger more serious projects. For example, for a very small outlay, you and your friends or family can paint the local clinic, school or meeting hall, or help lay a concrete floor in one of the poorer homes. We have had volunteers from all walks of life and are open to and grateful for whatever aid is available. It is always a good idea, if possible, to have a vehicle of one's own for greater freedom. We now have a newly paved road which passes right by our entrance. There are a number of different buses which cover the route from Santa Elena (Flores) to San Pedro (1km from us) several times a day and will pick you up and drop you off at our very door. Timetables are provided below and buses are punctual. There are also microbuses from Santa Elena to San José every half hour or so and from there you can take a tuk tuk to us. It is also possible, though naturally more expensive, to rent a boat in Flores and come across the lake or take a private taxi. • Santa Elena to San Pedro: 6 a.m; 10 a.m; 12 noon; 4 p.m; 5 p.m; 6 p.m. • San Pedro to Santa Elena: 4.30 a.m; 5.30 a.m; 6.30 a.m; 7.30 a.m; 11.30 a.m; 2.30 p.m.
