About this space Perfect getaway for two, wanting peace and privacy. Just a short drive to Coral Bay or the incredible Beaches of the North Shore. The stand alone cottage is bright and airy, easy to get to, has all the ammenities-including beach chairs and umbrellas. Chill on your deck with views of Bordeaux Mountain and Coral Bay or unwind in your air conditioned suite, where your king size bed awaits. The Seahorse and The Turtle is the perfect place to take in all the beauty of StJ. The Seahorse and The Turtle Guest Cottage will absolutely delight and meet your travelling needs. Our spacious cottage is a newly-renovated 450 square foot studio with EASY access (park right in front of the cottage, about 20 feet to the front door, no stairs or steps.....drive up the paved street-no need for a 4WD). Our studio cottage is located on easy-to-find Ironwood Road, Upper Carolina, just 20 short minutes from the Cruz Bay Ferry. Ironwood is a paved road that is ALOT less bumpy than most, and no 4 wheel drive needed. There are two outdoor sitting areas. One is the front deck looking out onto Coral Bay and the valley and the other is a shade sail covered garden area by the front door. From the outside patio, you can enjoy the gorgeous views of Coral Bay to the southeast and Bordeaux Mountain to the southwest. In its prior life, our guest cottage was a quaint carpenter's workshop. The cottage studio was constructed with massive beams left over from construction of the old Cruz Bay ferry dock. We hand-sanded and varnished the cottage beams in order to feature their warmth and unique joinery. The studio footprint is one room and measures approximately 450 square feet including the main room and bathroom. The front deck features two Adirondack chairs and is perfect for morning coffee or evening cocktails. The main house is located just below the cottage, and it is one of the first residences built in the Upper Carolina. A local cabinet maker, Adonis Walters, designed and crafted the kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as the platform bed which supports a new high-end king mattress. Drift off to sleep under cool natural fiber sheets after your day exploring this beautiful tropical isle. The studio has air-conditioning available, although because of the constant breezes and moderate temperatures it is rarely necessary. In the morning enjoy lounging on the comfy king bed and gaze out over Bordeaux Mountain and the valley below, or take your coffee to the deck and enjoy viewing Coral Bay. We often catch sight of the many birds of St. John from the deck. Kestrels and Red Tailed Hawks soar and float on the valley winds below and the mountain breezes above you. Or you might catch a view of a coven of Smooth-billed Ani, called black witches, cackling in the nearby trees. Or enjoy the territorial spats between a Bananaquit and a Green-throated Carib Hummingbird over a flower or feeder. There is always the chance a donkey or iguana may be in the neighborhood looking for handouts. The locals try not to encourage their shenanigans with food. For beach hopping, you will find beach chairs, beach towels, umbrella, shaded tent, noodles, and a small cooler at your cottage. There are even beach friendly plastic dishes if you want to picnic on the beach. For downtime you can reconnect with friends and family on the internet. A smart TV is also available, with streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime. (There is no cable/local tv stations.) We strongly recommend you book your car rental as soon as your reservations are confirmed. We are easy to find. Our house manager lives nearby and will be available or as scarce as your needs dictate The whole studio cottage is yours to relax, lounge, cook, read, nap, or delight in....the only ones wanting to hang with you are the banaqueets at the bird feeeder. Chances are, we, the hosts, won't be there personally, but our incredible property manager is just a few doors down, and is a phone call away if you need help with anything. Otherwise, we respect our guests privacy, and are available at their convenience. Coral Bay restaurants and shops are just a few minutes ride down the mountain towards the bay. Maho Bay, the best turtle spotting North Shore beach, is a short ten minute drive. Most North Shore beaches are only a ten to fifteen minute drive away. You do not need to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle to get to our cottage, but you may want one to explore other parts of the island. You can walk or enjoy a morning run on the friendly neighborhood roads just outside the cottage. (If you want a chill, peaceful, homebase... surrounded by nature, Coral Bay is the neighborhood for you. If you want to be in the heart of town, walk to restaurants and bars, then you may want to look into the Cruz Bay neighborhood.) Our road is paved, and while it's easier to get around the island with a 4WD, it's not necessary to access the cottage or driveway. Parking is on the same level as the cottage, and only steps away from the front door. Please read our manual when you arrive. We are set up for one or two guests ONLY. We ask that you do not show up with an additional guest beyond the welcomed one or two. We do not have the resources to accommodate more than two guests per reservation. Like St. Johnians, please observe water and electricity conservation practices. We collect rainwater from our roofs to supply all of our water needs, so the supply is limited, especially in the dry season. In addition, electricity is expensive on the island, so please use what you need to be comfortable, but be mindful about your consumption. We ask that you do not leave the air conditioner running or non-essential electricity on while you are not at the cottage. We live in the tropics and do our best to keep insects and pests out of our houses. To do this, please store opened food containers in the refrigerator or inside the oven to help minimize attracting insects. Please don't encourage or feed the iguanas or the donkeys. Our donkey gate must be closed and locked in order to protect you and the donkeys. Sand belongs at the beach. We have provided an outdoor shower to rinse off after a day at the beach. If you need something, please ask. Enjoy St. John!
