It does get mixed reviews, from 5's to 2's (more 5's than anything), but I really love this little place. And yes, it is little, one of the complaints, by the way. However, the food is quite good, reasonable and the staff is awesome. You can meet many Kailua and Lanikai locals here. If you like ice cream pies, they are very good. Parking is very limited in their lot, but there ample parking across the street at the beach park. (Don't leave valuables in your car.) 2. Moke's - This is a great breakfast place. Everyone raves about Cinnamon's, but I think Moke's beats it, hands down. I love their banana pancakes. The food here is very reasonable and you get the large portions you will need for a full day on the Island. One great benefit is that if they are crowded it is a very short walk to Kalapawai Cafe. Which brings me to my next favorite: 3. Kalapawai Market and Cafe. There are actually two Kailua locations. One at the north end of Kailua Beach Park and the other in Kailua Town just as you enter Kailua from the Pali Highway on the North side of the road. They have the best muffins I have ever tasted! My daughter always expects me to bring some home to Phoenix and is the first thing she asks for. Get them before your daily excursions. Their food is quite good. The one at the beach park does grilling throughout the day and the burgers are excellent. 4. Hibachi Spirits-Market-Pupus - They are not a restaurant, however, you can get some of the best ready to grill shish- kabobs and poke on the island. Use the grill at the house. They cook quickly and make it really nice for a relaxing evening. Hibachi is at 615 Kailua Road. 5. Haleiwa Joe's in Kaneohe - this restaurant is set in the most idyllic jungle gardens you can imagine. The food is decent and the ambiance is spectacular. You have to eat here at least once. Go before dark to walk the gardens. It is an awesome place for a wedding. They have a perfect little chapel. It is located at Haiku Gardens at 46-336 Haiku Road Kaneohe. 6. The Grove – this restaurant opened last year and has fantastic food at reasonable prices. They have a really nice patio and is in Kailua Town. 7. Lanikai Juice – This is a great juice and smoothy bar in Kailua Town. Their fruit bowels are fantastic as well. You can make everything yourself in the Vitamix in the house, but it is nice to try their almost limitless variety of topical concoctions. This is definitely a healthy alternative to fast food. 8. Down to Earth - To purchase great great organic food for the Vitamix, or whatever, Down to Earth is the place. I like to support them because they were here long before Whole Foods and cost less. 9. Whole Foods – Well Whole foods needs no help from me to market them. If you have never been to Whole Foods and want to experience the best of the best in organics, incredible variety, and great wines, cheeses, fruits and vegetable, etc. This is the place. It is $$$, though. 10. Farmer’s Market – This is not a place, but an event. It is held on Thursday's evenings in Kailua Town. You can purchase many locally grown foods and try some unique specialties. It is really a lot of fun, too Ok, I just have to add this one in because I love chocolate and macadamia nuts. The undisputed leader in “the chocolate covered macadamia nut world” are Moana Loa milk chocolate covered macadamia nuts. They sell them at Walgreen’s. Don’t waste your calories on Hawaiian Host, Moana Loa is the winner (in my humble opinion). Best fine dining in Waikiki: 1. The Beach House at the Moana Surfrider Hotel on Wakiki Beach. The food here is fabulous and so is the service. Make sure to get reservations. You can usually valet park at the circular drive at the hotel portico. Try to sit on the veranda and the best table is the one at the very back right on the ocean. When you finish eating, take a stroll down the beach to the Royal Hawaiian. So, dine in sandals. You can also sit in the rocking chairs and watch the action on 2. Kalakaua Avenue. Dinner for two, with wine, dessert and tip is under $200. It is well worth the investment. 3. Goofy - Best Breakfast ever in Honolulu. 4. The Aloha Stadium Swap Meet – this may sound a little cheesy, but if you love to find bargains and unique things from all over the Pacific, this is the place. You can combine this with a visit to the USS Arizona Memorial if you want a very full day. 5. USS Arizona Memorial – if you have never been to this powerfully moving exhibit this is a must see. I have seen it many times. As a child, I was not allowed onto the memorial because you had to be 8 years old then to visit the ship (not so now as there are no age restrictions). I had to wait many years until I returned as an adult to see this. Once you are there and realize there are 1177 dead sailors a few feet below you just under the surface, it is quite sobering. The ship still leaks bunker C oil from her fuel tanks and with each drop you see rising to the surface connects you immediately to the sacrifices made by that great generation. It brings tears to my eyes every time. Go out to the USS Missouri if you have the time. Its immense size, firepower, and history are very impactful. The most famous, of the many Japanese surrender ceremonies, were held on her decks. 6. Shark’s Cove – I think this is the best easy snorkeling found on Oahu. Imagine the best aquarium you’ve ever seen and you are swimming in it. This is Shark’s Cove. There is a nice tidal pool area for the smaller kids. If the surf is up, stay out! There are many jagged volcanic rocks and coral that can wreak havoc on your body in a high surf. But if conditions are right, you will see some of the most spectacular tropical aquatic life ever. You don’t need to scuba dive, it is all right before your eyes – thousands of spectacular reef fish. You know the little neon’s we all had in our aquarium as kids? Well, imagine that same neon 2-3 feet long. That is Shark’s Cove. It is located on the North Shore near Sunset Beach. Ask the locals for the exact spot. Hiking – There are hundreds of miles of hiking trails on Oahu. However, there are two that I think fit the bill well for the limited time most of us have on vacation. The first is the Pill Boxes Trail above Lanikai. The trailhead is near the golf club entrance in Lanikai. There are some steep sections and some with short sections with a shear drop over the escarpment. If you are acrophobic, you may want to skip this one. But, the views are spectacular and on a clear day you can see all the way to Haw’aii (the big island). The second is the Judd Trail. There is a hiking book in the house and will tell you its exact location. It is off of the Pali Highway (61) on Nuunau Pali Drive. The hike is beautiful and once you reach the ridge line you can see all the way to Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. The very first part goes past a waterfall and through a bamboo forest.
