Rooted in community, we are an authentic off-grid retreat intentionally designed for the conscious traveller. Whether you’re seeking mountainside adventure or a place to unwind, we offer a perfect earth-friendly getaway to slow down and feel inspired. With each Hideaway stay, we plant 3 trees locally on your behalf to ensure lasting, positive impact. The YEWO Hideaway is located in a small village called Manchewe, close to Livingstonia in Northern Malawi. The house was built with intention, care, and a whole lot of love. We are excited to now share our little getaway with you. Nestled in the treetops overlooking the Great Rift Valley & Lake Malawi, our home was handcrafted using local materials and has been thoughtfully designed in an earthy and calming way. You will find a blend of minimalist design, natural materials, and bespoke Malawian craftsmanship to create the perfect bohemian, laid back feel. Inside, the open plan living dining and kitchen area are bright, stylish and spacious, with tall ceilings and a lot of light. You will find a selection of games, books, artwork, ceramics, handwoven textiles, rugs and designer furniture that add to a relaxing experience. Our well-equipped kitchen includes a gas oven and cooktop, large fridge-freezer, and an array of cooking equipment and utensils for the avid home cook (we suggest you pick up groceries at Shoprite in Mzuzu). Or, if you prefer a meal out, you can wander down the shortcut to visit our neighbors, the Mushroom Farm, for good food, cold beer, and meaningful conversations. We have also created a new delivery service to order take-away meals & drinks directly to your doorstep. More details in our guest book when you arrive. The two bedrooms include: 1 queen bedroom that opens out to the sunny main deck, and double bedroom with a cozy bespoke single bed loft that both children and adults will no doubt gravitate towards. We provide a set of bed linens for all beds, along with mosquito nets, and bath towels. Our a large bathroom utilizes compost toilet and has a shower with hot water that overlooks lake Malawi. Surrounding the Hideaway is a large covered cliffside deck, with plenty of seating area to enjoy the fresh breeze and warm evening nights overlooking the dotted fishing boats on lake Malawi. Outside, you will find yourself gravitating towards a hammock with a book in hand, or an afternoon nap in one of our chill-out nooks around the house. In the evenings, you may want to cozy up close to our outdoor fire pit under the stars, or relax in our iconic wood-fired outdoor bathtub. For those of you seeking adventure we offer guided daily treks to nearby Manchewe waterfalls, farm-to-table coffee tours, and stunning Chombe Plateau. And after a day of hiking, you may want to relax with a one-hour full body massage while overlooking the Great Rift Valley. Bishop (our co-host) will meet you at the YEWO Hideaway and will give you a quick tour. After that, you will have your own set of keys so you can come and go as you please. We provide a lockbox and there will always be members of staff working onsite day and night. Although Kyle and I will not be available in person, Bishop (YEWO's in-country sales director) will meet and welcome you to the YEWO Hideaway and will be your point of contact throughout your entire stay. In addition, we have a wonderful team of staff at the house who will be around 24/7 if you should need anything. The YEWO Hideaway is truly a destination. Located in the small mountainous village of Manchewe, the journey to reach us is part of the experience. If you are driving, our house can be reached easily within 3-4 hours from the Tanzania border, 2-3 hours from Malawi's Northern city of Mzuzu, and 7-8 hours from Malawi's capital, Lilongwe. If you are coming from the South on the M1, we advice taking the scenic back road from the turn off at Phwezi (about 1-1.5 hours north of Mzuzu). This road is now completely paved up until Manchewe village, and is a beautiful drive. (The times listed above will be longer is you plan to take public transport- please reach out if you need advice of how to reach us on public transport/private taxis). If you are driving on the back road from Phwezi, you will hit a dirt road when you reach Manchewe village. Keep driving past the primary school, the football pitch, the YEWO Workshop, and then you will see ' the YEWO Hideaway' signpost on the left-- turn into the driveway. If you are coming up the Gorde road, once you pass the Mushroom Farm signpost, we are the next stop on the right-- turn into the driveway. Once you are on the mountain, everything is in walking distance, or there are motorbike taxis if you prefer. Located 2-3 hours north of Mzuzu, nearby to the historic town of Livingstonia, the Hideaway is the perfect base for exploring Northern Malawi. With many shortcut running through our land, we are a 10min walk from the Mushroom Farm, and 15 minutes from Manchewe Village and the YEWO workshop.
