Kailana Cottage includes two separate rental units that share a hallway. These units are freshly remodeled, super clean, fresh and new. This unit is called Hibiscus, it is set up like a hotel room; spacious room with King sized bed, large bright bathroom, lots of closet space, TV, desk and a tea/coffee station with mini fridge and microwave. THIS UNIT DOES NOT HAVE A FULL KITCHEN. Close to the airport with automated check in and flexible booking, free parking, King sized bed and large bathroom. This space has lots of natural on a quiet side street. AC to cool you down after a hot Hawaiian day. The bathroom is large and freshly remodeled. There is a causeway entrance and grassy area in front of the house. Happy to give tips around the area. When I'm available, happy to take guests out on a paddle board or ocean kayak. This is a residential area so it's important to Kokua (cooperate) in not disturbing our neighbors. There are two grocery stores nearby both called Matsuyama's market. One is at the top of the main road (Kaiminani dr.) the other is at the bottom (Kohanaiki) and about a mile south. Both markets have a gas station next door. The market on the bottom road also has a Mexican Restaurant (Los Habeneros) a Coffee Shop (Mountain Thunder) and a local food cafe (Pine Trees Cafe) that is pretty good. The nearest beach is Pine Trees (Kohanaiki) directly across from Matsuyama's market. It's a popular surf spot for locals and beach BBQ, not as good for swimming or paddle board (very rocky). Kua bay is a beautiful, pristine white sand beach about 5 miles north. Perfect for swimming, sunbathing and sending pics home from. There are showers and restrooms too. If you take the paddle board or Kayak out, the best/easiest places to launch are: - King Kamehameha Beach Hotel, downtown Kona - Kahaluu Beach Park, south end of Alii Dr. - Keauhou Bay, at the end of Alii dr, towards the Sheraton. - Manini beach, Historic Kealakekua bay down Napoopoo rd. - Recommendations for Kona town Kona is famous for Coffee and Fishing. A wise bumper sticker once read about Kona, 'A quaint little drinking village with a fishing problem'. If you like fish, you'll love Kona, definitely go on a fishing or dive charter if you have your sea legs. The night life leaves a bit to be desired, but you can find a good time as long as you don't go out too much past 10:00 pm. : ) Popular spots are Oceans and Laverne's both located at Coconut grove, next to the big outdoor volleyball pit on Alii Drive. Best coffee shop: Kona Coffee and Tea Company located at the Kona Coast Shopping Center as you enter Kona town. Best Ocean front Dinner: Foster's Kitchen located at Coconut Grove on Alii Dr. Kona and the Big Island in general is very spread out. Public transport is NOT a viable way to get around. Uber and Turo are available but because we're so spread out they become cost prohibitive very quickly. Having a rental car is a necessity here.. We like to highlight to our guests the benefits of renting from us rather than a big hotel or resort... For example; Even the budget hotels in Kona run anywhere from $300 to $600 a night and the big resorts on the coast from $500 to as high as you want to pay. Hotels/resorts will charge you a $25-$30 per DAY amenity charge, $20-$40 per DAY for parking if you are so bold as to want to drive. Most hotels/resorts no longer offer daily housekeeping. Depending on the hotel resort, you will mostly be limited to overpriced dining options and very little options for preparing meals yourself. If they offer laundry service, be prepared to invest your child's college fund. Most have a concierge service who are well intentioned, hard working people but unfortunately they are incentivized to offer the tour or activity with the highest commission and not necessarily the best service. Most of our resorts and hotels are located far from town and the airport which limits your ability to explore and find other dining, shopping and activity options. Finally, the big hotels and resorts are all owned by massive corporations that do not invest their earnings into our local community. By contrast, we are a local family who invest in this community both with our money, volunteering and in our professions. We keep our rates as low as possible because we travel often and love a good deal. We're not across from any famous beach so we can offer very competitive pricing while also giving you as close to a resort experience as we can, We charge a ONE time cleaning fee rather than a daily amenity fee. There is no charge for parking. If you need recommendations we can suggest many restaurants, luau's, activities and tours based on what we experience and what our guests report back to us rather than any commissions being paid (we're still waiting for that check to come in). We provide a space for you to leave your luggage if you need to before your rental is available. We truly appreciate welcoming folks to our home and being a part of their magical Hawaiian vacation. Please reach out if you have any questions, we're always happy to share our love of the islands.
