Budget-friendly, cozy studio located seven miles north of Hilo in Papaikou and settled along the Ka'apoko Stream. *We are very near to completion of the remodel and will have updated pictures very soon.* The space is perfect for couples or a pair of friends who want to mostly spend their time outdoors while vacationing on the Big Island. The dwelling is unique in that it was originally built as a small snack shop in the early 60's that would cater to the kids in the school next door. The studio is 288 sq ft with vaulted ceilings which really open up the space. It is connected via the back wall to the main part of the house which is another rental unit. All the walls are insulated to help stay cool during the day. There is a an AC unit which also acts as a fan for airflow. The kitchen has a small fridge with freezer, a microwave, a 19" stove with oven, and basic cookware. As mentioned above, the space was originally a snack shop in the 60's. A lot of folks in Papaikou used to come here when they were in school themselves. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep it as a kitchen, so we've renovated this area to be rented out to individuals who love to travel. A portion of the revenue generated from these units will be donated to the Kalanianaole Elementary School to help support the community. The entire house is located next to a stream, but studio guests will not have access to it for the time being. As we get closer to finish renovating the actual units, we will landscape the yard to make it more accessible. Kalanianaole is an elementary school adjacent to the studio, and kids from the neighborhood will walk to and from the school along Old Mamalahoa Hwy. The area is safe to go for a run, as some residents can be seen doing so in the mornings and evenings. The Hawaiian Plantation Museum is down the road next to the Post Office, and although small, it is full of black and white photos and old farm equipment, portraying the impact the sugar industry had on the lifestyle of all of Hawai'i. There is a parking spot for studio guests down the driveway behind the house. You can also park across the street in the graveled area. Kimura's General Store is on the corner of Hawaii Belt Rd and Old Mill Rd. They have some pantry basics, hot and cold food, snacks, beer, and liquor. Lyman Bay has beach access and is 0.7 miles away from the studio. It is best to walk there since parking is limited at the beach itself. **Please note: the studio is located right along Old Mamalahoa Highway and the studio faces the street. Vehicles driving by can be heard from inside. The school next door also means there's heavier foot and vehicular traffic on the road around 8am and also at 2pm Per new Hawai’i state law concerning short term vacation rentals, there are additional taxes to be added to new AirBnB listings. Transient Accommodation Tax is required and is listed under “Resort Fee”
