See “guest access” section below for details. CLEANING MEASURES Taken for COVID Safety: Our apartment is thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and aired out after each stay. Your entrance and outdoor patio area are all yours, no one else touches them during your stay. 90% of the time we block at least one night (28 hours) in between each stay. I clean the apartment myself, and I am meticulous. This apartment is completely separate, with a separate entrance, but it is attached to our home. Let us know in advance if you plan to use our boards. We have soft racks, 8' and 9' soft boards for beginners, 8 different hard boards (6', 7', 8', 9') and a few wet suits - but not in all sizes. It's best to bring your own wetsuit. **First time surfers must take a lesson before using our boards - for safety reasons.** LOCAL SURF SCHOOLS: Eli Howard Surf School, Leucadia Surf School, Encinitas Surf Lessons, and Moonlight Beach Surf Camps are located in Moonlight Beach, approx. 2.5 miles north of Cardiff at the base of Encinitas Boulevard. This beach has volleyball nets, bathrooms, showers, lifeguards and good food at the snack bar. The best place to park is up above, in the parking lot on the hill behind the lifeguard tower. You can also park on the street if you can find a spot. For beginners, it’s best to use as BIG a board as you can get! A nine or ten foot long soft board is usually sufficient for adults. Children can use smaller foam boards in the 8 foot range. Check the water temperature because you may also want a wetsuit (which is usually included with the lesson). We're happy to discuss local tips with you or we can be totally hands off. Whatever you prefer. You can self check-in anytime after 3pm using the lockbox. Cardiff is a fun, friendly, residential surf town on a hill by the ocean. Take in ocean views as you walk down the hill to everything in Cardiff: gourmet coffee, 15 restaurants, the Lost Abbey Microbrew tasting room, bars and Seaside Market (a gourmet market & deli with everything!). Cardiff State Beach has a wide sandy beach located across the Coast Highway from "Restaurant Row," where you can dine-in or take-out. The beaches are gorgeous and there's awesome surf for pros and beginners, alike. See photo captions and our online guidebook for our very favorite places. Plus, our guests really appreciate the "local favorite" information binder in our apartment. Cardiff is situated on a hill overlooking the ocean, which makes for awesome ocean views wherever you walk. We live at the top of the hill, so bring walking shoes. If you're a hiker, it's no problem to put on one of our backpack beach chairs and walk 7 blocks down the hill to the beach. If you plan to schlep a lot of gear or long boards, you'll definitely want a car. The beautiful San Elijo Lagoon hiking trails (lots of bird watching) now connect through the Lagoon to Solana Beach! Enjoy a very scenic 2.5 mile walk or bike along the coast to the neighboring towns of Solana Beach or Encinitas (both have beaches, lots of restaurants, breweries, coffee shops and free street parking). PARKING: Residential parking for 1 car in our driveway. TRAINS: The Encinitas train station is 2.5 miles North of us, and the Solana Beach Station is 2.5 miles South – it’s a $10 Uber or Lyft ride to our home from either station. You can easily get to downtown San Diego and Los Angeles Union Station on the train, and then on to LAX (Los Angeles Airport) via the rapid bus from Union Station. BUSINESS TRAVELERS: Easy access to the I-5. BEACH PARKING: During the Summer High Season, the beach parking lots and spaces along the Coast Highway can fill up by late morning. But you can park on the street in Cardiff and walk across the Coast Highway to the beach at San Elijo Campground. From there, surfers can paddle out to Cardiff Reef. Or walk a little further south, across the lagoon bridge to Cardiff State Beach (the widest sandy beach around) and "Restaurant Row."
