This property is truly one of a kind in Taos-perhaps anywhere. The main house is a wonderful old adobe on two pastoral acres down a country road surrounded by trees, lawns and gardens just across the Road from the Rio Pueblo. It has a remote and private feel and yet is less than a five minute drive from the Plaza and 30 minutes from world class skiing. You are entertained by stars and coyotes at night, roosters, the neighbors' donkey and church bells in the morning and birds all day long. The house is the true essence of southwest decor. The walls have a soft, buttermilk/beeswax sheen. Dark beamed ceilings and wood floors throughout are complimented by antique furnishings, native rugs, original art and many amazing and creative touches. It is a small home, perfect for a couple although it does have a second bedroom with its own private bath for two couples traveling together. Enter from the covered portal into a kitchen fully equipped for all your cooking needs. If I don't have it, you probably don't need it! You will enjoy cooking on my 1949 O'Keefe & Merritt vintage gas stove. The pantry has additional cooking supplies as well as a microwave. The living room is warm and inviting. A gas log stove in the corner provides central heat, but the wood burning kiva fireplace sets the tone. Ample firewood is located in a wood box just outside the kitchen door. NOTE: please only operate gas log stove in living room and kitchen from wall thermostats. If main gas valve is turned off the cost to relight and check by Licensed Gas Fitter is $125. The TV is a Roku TV with access to Netflix, Hulu and local TV channels. There is a DVD player. There is an extensive DVD library. All you need for a quiet evening at home. In fact most guests spend more time here relaxing than they do out adventuring. The master bedroom has an antique brass and iron queen size bed with down comforters and lots of pillows and good bedside reading lights. There is also an electric mattress pad for instant winter cozy bed if you choose. There is a electric stove in the corner for cold winter nights. The large walk in closet opens to a hot tub under an 60' elm tree. (Robes and hot tub towels provided) Please shower before and after using hot tub. (N.M. State law) The second bedroom has a queen bed, a portable heater and another electric mattress pad. There are two baths in the home. One is off the second bedroom (tub/shower combination) and one in the hallway between the kitchen and great room. (Walk in shower) The outdoor patio is furnished with teak garden furniture, a fireplace and BBQ grill. The yard is enchanting even in winter. Towering cottonwood trees line one side of the property above the numerous out buildings. There is a large lawn and an orchard of mature apple, apricot, plum and pear trees. The many garden beds were lovingly planted by me ( a professional landscaper) and are surrounded by many tall trees and a flowing acequia for irrigation- a centuries old Taos tradition. This property was once the home of Taos writer John Nichols of 'Milagro Beanfield War' fame which was written in what is now a two room guest casita (Also available for additional guests) However, this property is described in virtually all of John's books both fiction and non fiction in great detail. John is a friend and still lives nearby. I have his books in the hallway bookcase for guests to enjoy as well as photos he gave me of the property when he lived there. (Brown binder in kitchen bookcase) As he said when he first visited me, "When I lived here this place was a piece of s**t... Quite a character! There are fun and fanciful touches to delight throughout the property from the turquoise Willy's planter truck in the front pasture, the whimsical gardens and outdoor art throughout the property. The two story tree house is a fun day time getaway or summer sleeping. Children must be supervised in the tree house, but it is beloved by all ages! So much to explore here on my property. You will never be bored! There is also a two room casita/guesthouse across the driveway with a double and twin bed, lights and heat for overflow guests at an additional cost of $25 per person per night.Guests here can take advantage of the two full baths inside the main house--towels and robes provided. Another gas log stove heats the casita in winter. There is also a private outside shower for summer use. For the adventurous the tree house and an Airstream trailer are delightful summer spaces at the $25 per person per night fee. The tree house has two twins on main floor and a queen in the loft. There is a shaded deck with pasture views. It is built around a huge heritage apple tree. The Airstream is 1971 vintage with lots of privacy in the back pasture. A big covered porch offers sunrise and mountain views. The interior has been fully remodeled and has a double bed in front room and a twin down the hallway. ***Please note that when you rent the main house, the whole two acre property is yours to enjoy. I do not rent out any of the other spaces during your stay. Something guests love so much about my home is the privacy. This property has appeared in Enchanted Homes, New Mexico Magazine and Green New Mexico. It was also featured on a previous Taos Home and Garden tour. I am pet friendly at $10 per dog per night which you may leave at departure. Mutt mitts for clean up provided and dog sheets for furniture and beds. Please use. I also have a shaded fenced dog area. This property must be seen to be believed. It is truly magical! This entire two acre property is all available to enjoy and explore. I have a large workshop for future projects, numerous outbuilding storage rooms, a 1971 Airstream trailer which is also available for additional guests in the summer. (Note, additional cleaning fees if casita, tree house or Airstream are used for sleeping. Fees can be paid at departure) There are also 3 whimsical and very entertaining out houses as well as an outdoor shower. I am always available for questions, information, history or restaurant suggestions before or during your stay by email or my cell phone. You will feel you are out in the country, but are so close to the Plaza in downtown Taos Total peace and quiet Amazing star gazing since there are no streetlights Plenty of on site parking. Large vehicles, trailers or RV's can park in the back pasture too. Not much public transportation in Taos. The Blue Bus does service the entire Northern New Mexico area Private and quiet Convenient to the downtown Plaza Charm and comfort inside and out Gardens and container plants for guests enjoyment So many big trees offer summer shade, fall color, spring beauty and look amazing after a winter snow storm Patio with seating and relaxing, outdoor fireplace and BBQ Tree house Airstream Casita Fun whimsy everywhere dog friendly at $10 per night per dog which may be left upon departure. I provide dog sheets for sofas and beds and ask guests clean up outside.
