Welcome to our charming, historic home in this old Tobago neighborhood. The property was renovated, and all modern conveniences were installed but it maintains all the charm of its 150-year history. There’s almost always something in season - sapodilla, mango, guava, pomegranate or lemon. Guests are welcome to fruits but are reminded that the chickens and iguanas are pets, not food. A short stroll away is the magnificent views of Fort King George built in the late 18th century. This house and yard once hosted a tobacco processing operation and a chicken farm. It has survived generations of children and the devastating hurricane Flora in 1962. Its night-time view over the port of Scarborough may be brighter than the 1850's but it’s not hard to get lost in time looking at the brood of resident chickens foraging for fare in the large backyard. Sit and sip on the back porch or relax on the side deck which are also great places for bird watching. The space has several distinct seating areas for bonding with friends and family or alone time with a novel or your headphones. You will also find a functional dirt oven in the back yard. Please let us know if you would like to try using it and we will provide all the safety information and instructions. The cottage has two double beds in the first bedroom and one queen bed in the second so it can theoretically sleep 6 but that may not work for everyone. Both bedrooms are air conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms. Please also remember that this an old wooden house with lots of ventilation so you may occasionally see termite dust or the odd moth or house lizard at night. We try to live in harmony with nature and minimize the use of harmful pesticides. There is ample parking space available in the yard as well as street parking. Guests have access to the entire cottage and the yard. Although it is unlikely that we will be in Tobago during your stay, you're in great hands with our manager, Chris, who knows all the ins and outs of Tobago. We are certainly available by phone and will be glad to assist with contacts for rental cars etc. If you are passing through Trinidad, we will be glad to give you some tips as well. Unsurprisingly, the neighborhood is known as The Fort. With its magnificent views, the nearby Fort King George is one of our favourite places in Tobago, especially in the early morning and at sunset but do also visit during office hours to enjoy the museum exhibits. There are several good local food shops in Scarborough - at the Market, the Port (cow heel soup for breakfast!!!) and near the Esplanade (crab and dumpling for locals) during the day. Aside from fast food, night options are more limited but you can try Cafe Havana in Bacolet for a sit down meal. Most of the other eateries in Scarborough at night are fast or street food, which can be quite good. A short walk down Calder Hall Road takes you to the Windies mini mart where you can find a decent selection of groceries and dry goods and just to the left on Park Street to a small fresh fruit and vegetable stall. Downtown Scarborough is a short walk down the hill but a pretty steep climb back up. There are lots of shops, banks etc. A private medical center (24 hours) is also just down the street. Unless you are very fit or planning to get fit fast, we recommend a car. Route taxis don't come up the hill but you can of course hire a taxi to take you around. If you are going into Scarborough for business or east to Roxborough, Speyside or Charlottesville, the Cottage is a convenient jumping off point. The most popular beaches are a short drive away but many guests have been happy to pass their time in the tranquil surroundings of the Fort Cottage. On checking in you will receive additional information on the cottage and neighborhood, including HSSE information you should read.
