After a long day exploring London’s intrigues, relax in style before the stone fire in the spacious open-plan living room, with a modern, fully furnished kitchen and dining table to hand – or head up to the screening room and bask in the abstract art and surround sound system. Sleep in comfort in one of the deluxe beds in the three ensuite bedrooms (one kingsize, two double), each with fine bedding, towels and wardrobe space, as well as widescreen wall-mounted televisions. Originally built as the stables for Lancaster Gate’s Victorian townhouses, Lancaster Mews is now a peaceful haven from the city which surrounds it. The wider Bayswater area is the best of both worlds: a charming village feel combined with cosmopolitan bustle. The Mitre, a country-feel pub packed with locals, and Sheila’s Cafe, a snug and friendly breakfast spot, flank the mews entrance; and plenty more family-run delis, bistros and restaurants line nearby streets. The Mews borders some of London’s most sought-after neighbourhoods, like Notting Hill (and its Portobello Market) and Little Venice, well worth a visit. Cross Hyde Park to find some of the world’s best shopping streets in Knightsbridge, King’s Road Chelsea and South Kensington, as well as Royal Albert Hall, the Museum quarter and both Kensington and Buckingham Palace. Door to door, London Heathrow Airport is under 30 minutes away via the direct shuttle from Paddington Station; City Airport is 45 minutes; Gatwick Airport under an hour. Also from Paddington, the new superfast Elizabeth Line will take you to the West End in 5 minutes, the City in 10 minutes and, for adventurous souls, the traditional East End in 15.
