Two private islands to enjoy! Walk the rocky beaches. Hike along the trails that circumnavigate each island. Sit on the rocks and look at the ocean. Have a picnic. Sip some wine. Read. Think. Sleep. Meditate. Create. Dream. Just Be. Located about an hour and a half from Bangor, and an hour north of Acadia National Park, Lower Birch Island is a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. It is a great place for families, singles, couples, kids, and perfect for dogs! The two islands sit at the mouth of Pleasant Bay facing the open ocean. The 1,800 square foot, three bedroom, one and one-half bath house is on the 23.6 acre larger island. One bedroom has a king bed, one has a queen bed, and the third has twin beds. There is a queen sleep sofa in the living room. The house was totally refurnished in the fall of 2013 and includes a new refrigerator and LP gas stove. The house is fully quipped and has a fireplace, wood stove, and LP gas heater. Electricity is provided by off grid solar power, with a backup gas generator. Water is provided by a drilled well. The undeveloped, smaller 4.4 acres island is accessible by a land bridge that appears at low tide. You can walk across the land bridge for about four hours each tide cycle, so you have plenty of time to explore the small island and still return to the big island before the tide rolls back in. Boat travel from and back to Milbridge, Maine is included in the rental price. You can leave your car in Milbridge. Captain James Robertson, or one of his other captains, will take you on the scenic, 25 minute ride along the beautiful, rugged Maine coast to the island. The boat ride alone is an experience not to be missed. Have your camera or cell phone ready to take photos! Upon arrival at the island, Captain Robertson will help you get your luggage and food to the house, orient you to the property, and then leave you to enjoy the peace and solitude. He can provide you with fresh (and I mean fresh, literally right out of the ocean) lobsters at any time during your stay at an additional charge. Captain Robertson serves as the onsite rental manager and emergency contact during your visit. Ward Perry, the caretaker and builder of the house, serves as his back up. Both are local, life long residents and live nearby. I am available by cell phone any time. The islands are a truly unique experience. Many people dream about staying on a private island. If you are one of them, this is your chance! One of the attractions of Maine is that it combines the beauty of the forest with the majesty of the coast. The islands embody both. I make it a point to hike the trail around the big island each morning and each evening, often stopping to look at the ocean, scramble on the rocks, or explore the island's interior. The islands are a chance to finally get away. I live in the Washington, DC area, surrounded by crowds and traffic. The islands provide me with a necessary respite to get some peace and solitude, to rest and recharge. If you have a harried, busy "normal" life, they might be just the break you need. Dogs are welcome. I never go to the islands without my two. Dogs can run free 24/7. Seeing my dogs' unbridled joy as they bound off the boat when we arrive is a sight to behold. They often come back wet during the day, which means they are taking the opportunity to go for a swim! This is an incredible spot for kayaking. There are multiple accessible out islands to explore from Lower Birch (including uninhabited Upper Birch, just north), as well as the opportunity to cruise up both necks on either side of the bay, or around the points and along the coast. I don't provide kayaks, but Captain Robertson can get yours on his boat. Free parking is available at the Milbridge town dock, where you meet Captain Robertson for the trip to the island. Bangor International Airport is about an hour and a half from Milbridge. Bar Harbor regional airport is about an hour to the south. Captain Robertson spends all of his days on the water operating boat tours. He offers whale watching and puffin watching tours as well as custom tours. Check with him for details and costs. Additionally, he can take you back to the mainland whenever you wish, at an additional charge, if you want to resupply or spend the day exploring the area. Acadia National Park is about an hour drive south from Milbridge. If you have the resources, and depending upon his schedule, Captain Robertson can take you on a custom, all day cruise from Lower Birch down to Acadia.
