We are 25 minutes drive from Centro Historico of Oaxaca and 30 minutes from Monte Alban. Casa Grande is the largest of the four houses on the property. It is a comfortable home with 4 bedrooms, each with private baths, chiminea’s (pottery fireplaces) and separate entrances through the courtyards. It has a spacious dining room that comfortably seats ten. Adjoining is a sunken living room with a cozy fireplace. The kitchen is well equipped, has a free standing island, and a half bath. Both Casa Grande and La Casita have access to the swimming pool, the patio, the fields, the mineral springs, the onyx mine and the miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. You can swim, sun, hike, bike and enjoy rich birding (250 species) right here on the property and the surrounding hills. There's also a good ol' fashioned hootenanny with an open mic every week. Our staff cleans Casa Grande daily. Laundry services are also available. We can arrange to have breakfast and dinner prepared for you with traditional Oaxacan flavors using fresh, local ingredients. The property is equipped with high speed internet and WiFi is available throughout. There are strong 3G cell phone signals through Telcel, Movistar, and Iusacel. Kids love to play with the animals. We have parrots, turtles, burros, horses, dogs, cats and an occasional rabbit. Casa Raab is the home of Friends of Megan Animal Rescue, which is dedicated to the ongoing rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of abandoned and needy animals in and around the City of Oaxaca. Casa Raab grows its own agave plants for mezcal production on site. We have over 50,000 agaves in various fields and we distill several times a year. Ask us about visiting/participating when we are doing "a run" through the still. We also offer tastings of artisanal mescals from various producers around the region including our own. We're happy to help arrange cultural tours in surrounding villages, shopping trips, birding tours, visits to historic sites, artisan studios and other adventures including mezcal tours off the beaten path. Rebecca or Anthony are normally available throughout your visit to answer questions, provide assistance or take you on long hikes in the morning. Rebecca is also an accomplished cook and can offer informal cooking classes. Anthony is a "mezcalero" and can offer a world of info about mezcal; how to grow it and make it here at his own still. We are backed up by the National Forest and there are many paths into the hills. Our neighborhood below, San Pablo Etla, is a traditional Mexican village. Built on three small ridges, you can walk to the town center in half an hour. You will pass by traditional structures of adobe and tile, cement and stone, little household corn fields, playgrounds and schools ...until you get to the town center with attractive municipal buildings and San Pablo's little church. We are about 7 miles from Oaxaca City center. Your transportation choices are rental cars, public systems, or private drivers with their own vehicles. Rental cars allow freedom of movement but are rather expensive and require you as a driver. Sometimes this works best. Public buses are about a mile away. There are little motto-taxies that you can catch on our road that can take you to a bus or a taxi at the highway. We can also arrange more personal transportation services with private drivers and vehicles. This costs about the same as a rental car and you get a Oaxaca guide and driver too! Musicians of all sorts are welcome to play with us at our weekly "Bodega Boys" sessions out at the still. Mezcal, music, good friends and new people...sharing news, history and music into the night. If you are lucky, you might be here for one of our mezcal distillation processes...what an education!
