This beautiful archaeological zone built by the ancient Incas is based on figurative traces of a partridge, as its name indicates. Písac, is a district of the province of Calca, located 32 km northwest of Cuzco. Its altitude includes 2,950 meters above sea level. According to an Inca legend it is said that the Huayllapuma cacique had a daughter, called Inquill, whom he had to marry with the man who could build, in only one night, the bridge over the Vilacmayo River (a bridge of great importance for the defense of the place). Despite the hard work, Asto Rimac - a handsome prince - decided to accept the challenge, and ask for the hand of the princess. The authorities of the place arranged everything so that Asto Rímac began the workings, while the princess had to raise a hill without turning; because, otherwise, she and her fiancé would become stone. Almost at dawn, the prince had culminated with the work, but Inquill, unable to bear more, turned and was turned to stone to this day. GETTING FROM CUSCO TO PISAC: JOURNEY TIME: 45 – 50 MINUTES. DISTANCE: 28KM. ROAD TYPE: TWO-WAY, PAVED ROAD. If you pick up a taxi on the street, make sure it’s a licensed taxi. Fares should be between S/.50 – S/.60 (Approx. US$17.85 – US$21.50) Car hire: A great way to see the sacred Valley is by car hire. Cusco however, is a daunting place to drive with poor signage, congestion and no real rules of the road in operation! Our advice, if you go for this option is to hire a car and drive out of Cusco as quickly as possible. Once you leave the city behind it’s a beautiful way to see the Sacred Valley of the Incas and Cusco’s South Valley. The main car hire companies in Cusco are the usual suspects Hertz, Avis, and Budget. There are some tour agencies that rent cars in Cusco but we recommend going to the big names where you can be sure of getting good quality, well maintained cars and adequate insurance. Bus: Get the bus from the bus terminal in Cusco. We recommend you avoid the bus on the route from Cusco to Pisaq and instead take the colectivo which is safer, quicker and more comfortable. The bus tends to take longer and there has been frequent accidents over the past few years with old badly maintained buses and poor drivers. Bus fares approx. S/.2.50 (Approx. US$1.25).
