Starlight Llama Bed and Breakfast is Massachusetts’ FIRST solar-powered, off-the-grid, bed and breakfast. Note: Each of our rooms are charged per room per night. To book more than one room, contact us. We offer a unique option: Breakfast featuring foods from our gardens and eggs from our own hens. We can easily accommodate gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian diets. Enjoy your morning coffee watching llamas graze outside your window, or sit on the gazebo and toss a snack to the peacocks. Want your visit to be a blend of nature, culture and excellent food? Want a wonderful night's sleep or a chance to star gaze? Visit Starlight Llama Bed and Breakfast Massachusetts' first We are 100% solar powered! Completely off-the-grid, our working llama farm is just 10 minutes from Smith College and 15 minutes to downtown Northampton. Note: Each of our rooms accommodate 2 people. To book more than one room, contact us. Each room has a single queen-sized bed, its own private bath, and an entrance separate from the main house. Featuring furniture made by Starlight Llama's founder John Clapp, these cozy rooms have their own adjustable heat for your comfort. Dee and John used to own an art gallery, and all the rooms have original art made by Western MA artists or those who were shown in the gallery. Dee's art work is sprinkled throughout the house and John's books are available to purchase. Look out your window and see the animals! In addition to the Llamas, our farm includes many rescued animals including a donkey, emus, and peacocks. You are welcome to feed them through the fences or better, sit in the gazebo with a cup of coffee and toss the peacocks a snack. They have free range of the grounds and grace the bed and breakfast with their beauty. In the evening, come out, look up and see the stars! Two mountains shield us from nearby towns, so without light pollution you can see the Milky Way, listen to the owls, and just maybe, hear coyotes in the distance. Our vegetarian breakfasts are seasonally-based and feature eggs from our free-range chickens and ingredients from our organic gardens. We can easily accommodate vegan, gluten-free, or low-carb diets. Due to COVID, we no longer serve 'family style' but offer a Picnic breakfast that starts with granola, yogurt and fruit and we invite you to relax in your room or on the deck while you enjoy your coffee or tea, apple-cider French toast, pancakes, eggs or some other hot treat. There is a Keurig in each room so you can help yourself to coffee or tea anytime. Starlight Llama is located on 120 acres; we invite you to hike, snowshoe, cross-country ski, or walk our trails. Want a garden experience? Grab a tool and we will show you where to weed or what to plant. Alas, due to litigation, do not open any gates. Guests are not allowed to go into the llama areas or the barns, but you can feed the llamas grass or grain (we will give it to you). Bring your bike. We are located on the roads where the Northampton Bike Club rides! We are close to Look Park and the Rail Trail Regional Bike Trail. We also recommend an easy ride and must-see to Westhampton Center, a quintessential New England town with a white church spire nestled among the Berkshire foothills, and a hilltop apple orchard is nearby (they make awesome apple dumplings). There are two outdoor swimming spots just minutes from our driveway, and if you bring your kayak or canoe, we can suggest several places to paddle. We are a 10-minute drive to downtown Northampton’s wonderful restaurants and attractions which include Smith College Art Museum, music at the Calvin, Iron Horse or the Academy of Music; many art galleries and wonderful stores. Our location makes a wonderful base camp for day trips to the Berkshires, Tanglewood, and MassMOCA. Easthampton and Holyoke are the newest hotspots to enjoy the area's up-and-coming art scene and funky restaurants. We are in the '5 College' area, and each of the colleges hosts their own art museums, theaters, concerts, and much more. Ask us for ideas on where to explore, shop, sight-see, hike, bike, ski, paddle, and eat. Starlight Llama Solar B&B is off-the-grid and we do as much as we can to reduce our carbon footprint. We practice conservation; we use 100% LED lights, and room fans. While we do not have enough power for air conditioning, we cool the house as our grandparents did, we open the windows in the evening to capture the cool air then close them and pull the shades in the morning. Plus... our country location is usually 5 degrees cooler than town. For the comfort and safety of our guests we are 100% smoke-free in the building and the grounds and we charge a $450 fee if the room or the bed/bedding smells of cigarettes or other smoke. YES, we have internet access and use Starlink. You may be in the country, but you are still connected. Guests are welcome to use the gazebo, walk our 120 acres of trails, and visit John's reproduction of Thoreau' famous cabin on their way around the loop. In good weather take a cup of coffee outside to watch the llamas or toss a snack to the peacocks. Anytime, feel free to walk up to the gates and call for the llamas (please do not open gates). In inclement weather, we may have to coax them out with some grain. Just ask! We love Western Massachusetts and are happy to share things to do, places to see, and restaurants to visit. Dee makes great maps! Dee runs a department at UMass and does a lot of teaching and consulting for the program. She will do her best to answer questions, but email if you have questions and don't see her. She is more than likely working! We are located on 120 acres of family farm. Two mountains block the light from Northampton, so you can look up at night and see the Milky Way. Our area is surprisingly quiet, located next to conservation areas. Listen carefully for the sound of owls and coyote at night, or hawks and birds calling throughout the day. Be sure to to visit Mineral Hills Winery, less than a mile as the crow flies, during wine tasting events. Going into downtown Northampton for a night out? We can recommend our favorite restaurants - Paul and Elizabeth's, the India House, or one of many ethnic spots - followed by a trip to the Tunnel Bar. Want to see some great art? Visit Smith College Art Museum, A.P.E. Gallery, and the Oxbow Gallery. Here to shop or support local artists? Be here over the Arts & Industry, Eastworks Open Studio, or Paradise City Arts Festival weekends. Of course, we love to send people to the Montague Book Mill and the Peace Pagoda. Ask us for directions! We are just a 10-15 minute drive from downtown Northampton, so while you can bike it in the summer, you may want a car or a cab in winter. Taxis know us and can easily find us! We love to talk about solar power and what living off-the-grid entails. Ask! Note: Each of our rooms are charged per room per night and each room has a single queen-sized bed and fits up to two people. To book more than one room, contact us.
