Hikes at popular Reef Bay and Ram's Head are within 10 minutes, as well as several others as we are within close proximity the Virgin Islands National Park. Popular Coral Bay restaurants such as Skinny Legs, Rhumb Lines, Lime Out, and Miss Lucy’s are in this area. Two grocery stores are at the bottom of the hill. **EXTRAS. We will have the following supplies for your use at the cottage if you don’t want to pack them: ample towels for bath and beach, full-sized shampoo, conditioner, body soap, bug spray, hair dryer, beach towels, beach chairs, pool float noodles, coolers. Also provided are dishware, glassware, silverware, cookware, cooking and BBQ utensils, coffee, sugar, salt, pepper, oil and vinegar, a few spices, baggies, aluminum foil, etc., so other than your clothes, sunglasses, hat and SPF you don’t need to pack much at all! Each unit has its own private entry door (digital keypad) & 1 designated parking space. There are no shared INTERIOR amenities. There are shared EXTERIOR amenities limited to: parking, walkways and exterior stairs, and beach chair storage/beach rinse station. Host/property manager will likely be on site. Pets are on property (cats). You may see us tending to the cats, landscaping or out taking a walk. Coral Bay is on the east side of St. John and is more quiet than the west side, where Cruz Bay is. Coral Bay has several restaurants here; beaches and hikes are just as close to drive from Coral Bay as they would be to drive from Cruz Bay; if you ask us, has some of the better scenic views; and, has some of the best snorkeling is on the east side of the island. Our location provides a nice mix of tranquility and convenience for quick access to Coral Bay amenities and restaurants. DO I NEED TO RENT VEHICLE? YES, PREFERABLY A JEEP. Book rental vehicle early. Do not leave this toward the end of your vacation planning, as demand is high and travelers have wound up without transportation. St. John is an island, not a city, and is very car dependent. Uber and Lyft do not exist here; and, taxi service can add up to be as expensive as renting a vehicle. Also, taxis don't run all over the island all the time where you can quickly pick one up on demand - you may wait awhile to get service. There are no cheap taxis or scooters to hail a ride either. Guest(s) are responsible for providing their own transportation. WALKING vs. DRIVING: What makes St. John so beautiful is that it is mostly a national park with breathtaking mountainous vistas. There is very little flat land - That leaves vacation rentals to be up in the mountains, not easily walkable to beaches, hikes, restaurants, etc. Almost all beaches in St. John, and the surrounding property to access them, are located within protected land of the national park, therefore the vast majority of villas are not close to the beach to walk - they are up in the mountains, making it more than challenging to walk vs. drive. TERRAIN: The mountainous terrain throughout the island can be described as having roads that are steep, rugged and/or narrow with sharp turns as you ascend or descend mountains. Although the roads to get to our villa are completely paved, some roads are not and can be treacherous. A Jeep or 4x4 are the best option to get the best experience exploring the island so that the vehicle clearance is high and the vehicle is capable of climbing steep and rugged hills. We do not have recommendations of any company. _________________________ The benefits for renting a Jeep in St. John outweigh the benefits for renting a Jeep in St. Thomas: Benefits of booking a Jeep on St. John: * If you have car troubles, the Jeep company is here in St. John to help you, or if need-be switch vehicles for you; * If one or more car ferries are down for maintenance you don’t have to wait in a huge line of cars backed up at the St. Thomas parking lot sitting and waiting to get to St. John; * If you have a later flight and/or if there are delays (flights, traffic), you can still get on the foot ferry to get to your car rental and your villa rental for the night, saving you the hassle of possibly the next day having to backtrack to cross over islands to get the Jeep in St. Thomas (this would also involve taxi charges or ride service to get to and from the villa for the night and again the next day); * The foot ferry runs later than the car ferry, so if there are delays, you can still get to St. John by foot. For example: you get in late, you get your Jeep, but are too late to get on the car ferry to cross over to get to St. John. Benefits of booking on St. Thomas: * Jeep company may be willing to arrange to meet you at the airport; * Grocery shopping. * Don't let the benefits of renting in St. John necessarily deter you - many people rent from St. Thomas HOUSE RULE #1 = PROPER USE for reasonable wear and tear requires when Air Conditioning is running, the doors and windows must be shut to prevent damage or breakage. BOOK A RENTAL VEHICLE! (IN ADVANCE!): Don’t wait until you arrive on island. The island is mountainous and not easily walkable. Uber and Lyft don’t exist here.
