Owners live on the 20 acre property to make sure everything is perfect for your stay. TA-008-365-8240-01 The Blue Ginger Cottage has a full kitchen with dishwasher, full bathroom, a queen size bed and is most comfortable for two people. This cozy studio has everything you need for a relaxing stay. Cell service works for most. The Blue Ginger Cottage is on a secluded 20 acre estate surrounded by rainforest within the Puna Forest Reserve, 4 miles from Pahoa. Enjoy active steam vents with pure water steam, warm ground and experimental hot tubs over steam vents. With no visible neighbors the property is secluded and peaceful with citrus, bananas, fruit orchard, avocados, palms, and many flowers. We use natural cleaning products, non-toxic pest control and an advanced filtration system to offer excellent drinking water from rain catchment. Our nighttime temperatures are perfect for restful sleep. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hi or have questions. This is a great place to base your Big Island adventure. One mile from the highway on a paved road through rainforest the gated property has a long driveway and is surrounded by rainforest. There is a mile long trail through the jungle on the property featuring lava trees, 60 foot deep lava tube skylights, giant ferns, strawberry guava, passionfruit, orchids and native Ohia. The Puna Rainforest Estate includes the 4 bedroom main house and four cottages; Green Bamboo, Blue Ginger, Purple passionflower and Rainbow Cottage . See listings below for more information. The Four Cottages: (2 studios and 2 two bedroom cottages) Studios Blue Ginger Green Bamboo Blue Ginger and Green Bamboo each have a full kitchen with all the amenities, a full bathroom and a cozy queen size bed and a Futon. Both studios have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. 2 Room Cottages Purple Passionflower Rainbow Cottage Purple Passionflower has a kitchenette with all the amenities, a full bathroom, a king size bed in the master bedroom and two twins in the second bedroom. Rainbow Cottage is the same but has a queen in master bedroom. Both cottages have lanais overlooking the meadow and ocean. There is a gate to access our property and the gate is latched with a Carabiner. Please close and latch the gate behind you. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. The property is very private and quiet. Guests can use the BBQ and 1.2 mile rainforest trail around the 20 acre property. Guests are also invited to eat fruit from the orchard including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, tomatoes, banana, soursop, guava and avocado. We value your privacy and don’t require interaction for check in or checkout unless you want to say hello or have questions. There is little reason to leave a 10-mile radius but Hilo is only 20 miles away, Volcanoes National Park 40 miles and the Mauna Kea Observatory, where you can view through telescopes, is 50 miles. Kona is 100 miles over the new saddle road making the connection to the other side in about 2 hours. Puna Rainforest Retreat is special because you can stay in a private place in a natural setting away from the busy neighborhoods and resorts but are still close enough to enjoy the attractions. We are centrally located with many attractions within a short distance. The retreat is quiet and has no light pollution at night for unbelievable skies. Neighboring properties include La’akea Permaculture Farm and rainforest. Opihakao Road, only 1 mile away, is a world-class skateboarding hill and one of the best downhills and climbs for road bikes on the island. Cycling is ideal here because of the short distances between attractions. Natural steam vents are close by and funky Pahoa is 4 miles away offering fantastic organic food and supplies leaving little reason to leave Puna. Pohiki Bay is 8 miles away and offer paddleboarding, surfing, body boarding, swimming and hot springs. Kalapana and the new Kaimu Black Sand Beach are about 7 miles away near Uncle Robert’s kava bar and Sunday farmers market. A recent addition to Kalapana is the UFO landing pad and star visitor sanctuary created by the Reinstated Kingdom of Hawaii. The 20 acre retreat is within the Puna Forest Reserve and our grounds are surrounded by rainforest that is part of the retreat. Hawaiian Natives own the non-private property within the reserve to protect the Native Ohia forest that is sacred to them. The reserve was acquired by the Trust for Public Lands and transferred to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. The reserve is endangered species habitat for the Endangered Hawaiian Owl, Hawk, and Bat. While these species are otherwise very rare they are often seen at the retreat. Researchers continue to identify new species and there is ongoing collaboration to control invasives. The Ohia Forest has giant ferns, diverse species of orchids, epiphytic plants, strawberry guava, passion fruit, geckos, praying mantis and songbirds. The rainforest is very dense and so we ask guests to remain on the grounds for their safety unless we discuss the specific hazards. The retreat property surrounding the grounds feature many skylights into lava tubes as well as lava trees and caves. The Puna Rainforest is invigorating to see, taste, hear and feel.
