Experience the magic of old Hawaii in a unique Rain Forest setting of great beauty, character and comfort. We now have Starlink for internet, and have joined the 21st Century! We offer a stylish guest room with a pillow-top queen bed, bathroom with garden shower and lanai living area with an aquarium and steps to the inviting swimming pool. A refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are provided for your use. You have a table and chairs on your room's lanai overlooking the pool and gardens. You are also welcome to use the gas grill on the lanai. Please ask for instructions first. There are pool and beach towels. Unfortunately, the eruption destroyed our beautiful snorkeling spot nearby, but replaced it with a big black sand beach, at the end of a hike over the still warm lava. This beach has treacherous current's and not suitable for swimming however. Also be advised that you do not want to park a rental car on the road at the beginning of the hike. It will be broken into in record time. We don't have violent crime here, just rip off and vandalism. If you want to go, (and I highly recommend it) arrange with us to drop you off at the beginning of the hike. It' s so much easier than filling out a claim with the rental company and the Police. The Guest House is one of several buildings in an extraordinary architectural compound. The buildings surround a courtyard with a swimming pool, enclosed gardens and a lagoon with fountains. The complex sits in a spectacular landscape of exotic plants and blooming flowers. Numerous works of Asian art are on display in the gardens. Mangolay is a private, peaceful world in the center of a beautiful tropical rain forest. We are close to the ocean in a setting that is a part of Hawaii as it used to be. Please be aware that we are surrounded by wildlife. If you have irrational fears of frogs, lizards, butterflies and birds, the rainforest is NOT a place for you. Please don't come here. You won't be happy. You would think this would be self explanatory, but it's not! Solar-powered, environmentally conscious. Daytime is unlimited power, at night we try an conserve. But it's a big system, and we live well. There are 2 friendly dogs on property, thus we don't have thieves sneaking in, or wild boars using the pool. They will bark when you arrive, but will quickly learn you belong here. Close by are tide pools, ocean coves, a clothing-optional black-sand beach and unique Hawaiian weekly markets. Pahoa Town, a 15 minute drive, offers a colorful atmosphere and several good restaurants. Hilo and Volcano National Park are easily accessible and offer a variety of attractions. Mangolay is truly a paradise in Puna, a unique opportunity to stay in a very special magical place. Our guests are welcome to enjoy the pool and the spectacular gardens and the fruit and flowers you will find there. If you need laundry, please leave it with me in the morning. We are solar powered so must do laundry during the day. There is no charge for one load. I like to personally welcome you on your arrival, and invite you to join me at day's end on the lanai for a glass of beer or wine, or kava if you like. First off, let me answer the usual silly question: Waikiki is on Oahu, a completely different island 300 miles away. We are not any where near to it. Kona is on the other side of the island, about one hundred miles away, and about a 2 hour drive over the gap between the volcanoes. Most guests like to break up their vacation, with a stay on the Kona side, to experience the Dry Side of the island. This is where the major tourist industry is centered. Shopping malls, resorts, bars, diving and night life, and the traffic jams that come with it. Hilo is about 28 miles away, fun little college town, some good restaurants, a few museums, and the friendliest locals you will ever meet. Pahoa Town is about 30 minutes away. Super market, Hardware store, 6 or so restaurants, no visible means of support, very rustic and laid back. Kaleo's is the best restaurant in town, and it's a good idea to stock up at Malama Supermarket on your way here, so you don't have to back track up after arriving here. There is Da Store in Hawaiian Shores, about 5 miles from here. Better to shop in Pahoa. Volcano Park is about 45 minutes away. What's here? Thick rain forested area, you will be driving in through the burial grounds, and ruins. There are hidden tide pools you can swim in, and a black sand beach you can hike to, over still warm lava. We are still discovering new beaches as the lava cools. We have one of the last wild bits of coast line left on the island. The entire area is off the grid, most properties are 3 and 6 acres here, so everyone has a private world of their own. It's the land that time forgot. The nearest public transportation stops 4 miles away. A car is the only practical way to see Puna. For the last 1/2 mile, I am accessed by a gravel road, in a remote part of Hawaii. Go slow, and watch out for potholes. Any rental car is ok on it. Again, Mangolay is situated in a Tropical Rain Forest Setting. Nature's biodiversity at it's highest. If you have irrational fears of frogs, toads, insects, lizards, birds, or exotic wildlife in general; This is not the place for you. Please don't stay here, you will not be happy.
