Things to See and Do at Kailua-Kona Kailua offers the best of the Kona Coast and a traditional feeling of aloha for visitors. The grounds where the great King Kamehameha spent his last days are now a national historic landmark. Just across a small inlet is Kailua Pier. It is the focus of water activity and the departure point for charter boats, diving, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing expeditions. On the opposite side of the bay is Hulihe'e Palace, built in 1838. It's now a museum offering glimpses into the time of King Kalakaua, who used it as a summer palace in the 1880s. Across the street from the Palace is Moku'aikaua Church, the oldest church in Hawaii, erected in 1837 by the first group of missionaries. Alii Drive is the main route through Kailua, following the coastline south to Keauhou Bay, approximately five miles. It is a stretch of hotels, shops, boutiques and treasured historic sites. Along the way is White Sands Beach, where the sand is often removed in the winter surf, only to be brought back again in the summer. Just north of Keauhous Bay is Kahalu'u Beach Park, a favorite snorkeling spot. Kona coffee and macadamia nuts star in the homemade candies created by the Kailua Candy Company. A Hawaiian warrior marker pinpoints the location of the factory/store. Heading south to Keauhou, Alii Drive ends at this resort community. The area between Kahuluu Bay and the Keauhou-Kona Golf Course has a number of historical sights, including many heiau, ancient places of worship. At Kahaluu Bay, take a peek at blue and white St. Peter's Catholic Church. Scarcely larger than a playhouse, it was built to surmount superstition. Just north is Kuemanu Heiau, a well-preserved temple dedicated to surfing. Tiny Kahaluu Beach Park spreads along the bay's south shore. An ancient stone breakwater once protected the bay from currents. However, the wall is crumbling, making the area less safe for swimming and snorkeling. Between 800 and 2,000 feet, Kona is coffee country. You'll see groves of bushy, glossy-leafed trees, whose product has made this area famous. In March, the trees turn snowy with fragrant white blossoms. In the fall, the berries are ready to be harvested. The old Greenwell Store, a landmark since the 1860s, was rebuilt by the Kona Historical Society and Museum. It houses artifacts, photographs and relics. The Kona Arts Center features displays of member's work and traveling exhibits. Weaving, Hawaiian craft workshops, concerts and other performing arts are held here. In Honalo, see the Daifukuji Buddhist Temple and charming St. Paul's Catholic Church, built in 1864. Farther south, visit the Kona Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Company. Enjoy free tours, some recipes and sample nuts. Near the town of Captain Cook, you will find the Royal Kona Coffee Mill and Museum. In the store, enjoy a free cup of coffee and learn about the area's famous coffee industry. Continuing south, you'll reach beautiful Kealakekua Bay. On the shore is the village of Napoopoo. At Napoopoo Beach Park, the beach is rocky but the water is clear and full of fish. Farther down the coast lies Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park, also known as ?the city of refuge.? This sacred site provides a glimpse into Hawaii's past. St. Benedict's Painted Church has a spectacular interior, covered with murals, frescoes and designs created in 1903 by a Belgian priest. There are many other fascinating, historic and beautiful sites to explore on the Kona Coast and throughout the Island of Hawaii. On the east-central side of the island is Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (2.5 hours from the WorldMark Kona resrot), one of the most dramatic, scenic and unusual parts of the island. There is no public transportation available in the Kailua-Kona area, so please be sure to reserve a rental car for or use a tax • Guests of owners, rentals or exchanges will be asked to authorize a refundable security deposit on a credit or debit card at check-in. • Scooters, skateboards and in-line skates cannot be used on the property.
