If you ever wanted to experience life on a working Chocolate Farm? – this is your chance! Modern off-grid living at its best! We have 2 comfortable, contemporary guest rooms for rent jointly or separately. The Hilo Bay Room has an ensuite w/shower and private lanai overlooking Hilo Bay & rainforest and river. The Ocean-Cacao Room is a bit larger ensuite w/ giant views over the cacao orchard and ocean- whale watching from bed! It is all about indoor-outdoor living here in Hawaii. Your modern, relaxing bedroom has great ventilation and plenty of windows, bringing the outside in. But we also want you to enjoy our outdoor spaces as an extension of your room. This rental is not just about the bedroom and views- there are lots to explore on the grounds of our Cacao farm and gardens! Our large covered lanai- just outside the bedroom acts as an additional living and dining room with a beautiful ocean view and gentle tropical breezes to lull you into relaxation. Our comfortable guest rooms are not equipped with TV (to help you unplug), however, you can connect to the complimentary WiFi network and enjoy whatever you want to watch or listen to on your own devices. There is also access to our adjacent chocolate demo kitchen w/ toaster, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, glassware/plates/utensils if you care to prepare your own breakfast. We provide complimentary tea or coffee in the mornings. We encourage you to explore and enjoy our cacao orchard, suspension bridge, treehouse (65' in the air!), gardens, river and common spaces around the farm. Grab some beach chairs and enjoy a picnic at the stream- or dive into some juicy book. There is a large covered lanai w/ lounges and dining table that you can watch the whales go by or enjoy some evening cocktails. If you are interested in more cacao farm-related activities (like Farm Tours and Chocolate Tastings, or Cacao Harvest Events), feel free to reach out to us or check out HamakuaChocolate.c*om website. Tours are normally on WED and SAT at 1pm. We are often around working on the farm and are happy to provide local tips and advise- if you want that. We are also happy to allow you to have your own space if you prefer to have a intimate interaction-free experience (just let us know.) Both rooms have private keypad entries. If you are interested in our Cacao Farm Tour/Tastings or Harvest events, reach out to us or check out our HamakuaChocolate.c*om website. Hamakua Chocolate Farm is located in Papaikou- a small village just 8 minutes north of Old Town Hilo- on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a great jumping off point to explore Hilo Town, the Hilo Farmers Market, numerous waterfalls, botanic gardens, tea farms/tastings, zip lines, local beaches, surf spots, quaint sugar plantation villages and the Volcano National Park and its lava spectacles all along the enchanting Hamakua Coastline. It is important to have a car to get to our farm. There is a local bus, but it does not serve our private road and it is a long walk to the bus stop area. Uber, Lift etc are frequently unpredictable and occasionally will not drive up our gravel road. Due to this being a working chocolate farm with electric fences, suspension bridge, unfenced gulches and active farm equipment, we have a no guest under 16 policy. WIFI UPDATE: We recently installed Starlink. The speeds here in Hawaii have been variable and Starlink says they are working on that. We do have ok cell service in this area which varies depending on your carrier. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience- idillic life on a rural farm! GOOD LUCK GECKOS: Geckos (small green lizards) are a normal and amusing part of living in Hawaii. They are completely harmless and keep down the insect populations. Sometimes they find their way into the rooms, which is normal here. They most frequently love hanging out at the window screens where they hunt for little flies/insects or on flowers where they might lick some sweet nectar. They use to be revered as gods in Polynesia and would also bestow good luck upon you. POTENTIAL FOR INSECTS: As we are on a farm in the rainforest of E.Hawaii, summertime can bring the occasional light-attracted beetle or the potential of termite swarms. This is completely normal here. Ah, life in the rainforest! While we have screens on every window, a few very clever ones are attracted to light and will somehow find their way inside. We can occasionally get either very small beetles or termites that can swarm in the evening. We always tell guests to turn off the lights when you go out of the room and minimize the lights if you notice flying bugs in the room. If termites happen to swarm they do so between 7:30 and 8:30pm only (like they have a watch!). If you are hanging out outside, it is rarely an issue. If requested, we have an insecticide spray. This has rarely been an issue for any guests, but if you are particularly bug or gecko squeamish, we wanted you to be aware prior to booking.
