Hale Kupu is located in sunny Puna, just off the famous Red Road, steps away from Kehena Black Sand Beach. This 6 person home is set in lush tropical gardens. Two BR have ocean views, the "office" sleeps 2 people, has garden views. All 3 bedrooms have queen beds. Large fully equipped kitchen. Close to Uncle Robert’s; recent lava flows; many new black sand beaches. An easy drive to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Watch spinner dolphins play and hear whale song in season. Taste old Hawaiʻi ! This home is located in Kehena Beach Estates. The famous Kehena Beach (clothing optional) is just 1 to 2 minute’s walk (or 5 minutes if you dawdle, Hawaiian-style) from the house. It is a favorite with our local spinner dolphins. They play and jump almost daily. It’s a sight to see! In the winter you may be lucky enough to spot whales breaching, or hear them in the night, singing. Hale Kupu is perfect for 1 to 3 couples, or your family. Our home offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, including high speed internet. The large kitchen is well equipped and has everything you need to create a feast. Forage in the garden for seasonal herbs and produce. Outside dining is on the front lanai where the expandable table seats 4-8 people. The sunken living room is a comfortable place to lounge with a book from our collection. We also offer board games and DVDs. Smart TV is compatible with most online streaming services. The small office space adjacent to the living room has a desk and a printer for guest use. The upstairs master bedroom is a large, light-filled romantic loft. There is an en-suite half bath. This room has its own private balcony overlooking the ocean. One of our favorite morning rituals is to watch the sunrise over the ocean from here, with a cup of tea or freshly brewed Kona coffee. Downstairs front bedroom, has a partial ocean view, and a small TV. The garden view room also includes ocean glimpses and is private and quiet, with a queen bed, built-in-closet, and night stands. It is calm, can sleep two people comfortably, and is surrounded by lush greenery. Pull down the blackout shades for a peaceful daytime nap. People who like to sleep late choose this room! (It's also a nice quiet space for babies.) All sleeping rooms have ceiling fans, high quality queen beds, and built in closets, and window treatments. The downstairs bathroom features a large walk-in shower, and custom hand-painted tiles depicting Hawaiʻian sea life. The house has been lovingly cared for and decorated. The bright green of the exterior was chosen to match the color of the kupu kupu fern. The fern is the first new growth to sprout from lava. It represents rebirth, and renewal. Hence our name: Hale Kupu. Our house is fully stocked with everything for a tropical vacation. We supply everything from beach towels and boat shoes to boogie boards. We catch our own Hawai'ian rainwater, which is triple-filtered and UV purified to make it drinking quality. Plenty of off-street parking. Thanks to the 2018 eruptions of the nearby Kilauela volcano, the coastline has changed drastically. Pele (the volcano goddess) spared the boat ramp at Pohoiki, but built a new black sand beach in front of it, creating a warm pond for swimming. (And some more secret warm ponds behind - shhhh!) There is much to explore as you head north along the famous Red Road. And if you head in the other direction, in 10 minutes, you’ll come to Uncle Robert’s at Kalapana. On Saturday mornings there is a local market on the lava shelf in front featuring local produce, and food stalls. On Wednesday evenings, an array of talented local musicians play. (And sometimes special guest musicians and dancers from all over the world.) Guests have exclusive access to the whole house and garden, and to the storage shed where beach chairs and mats, snorkelling gear, boogie boards and other beach toys can be found. We will usually be off-island during your stay, and the house is self check-in via a lockbox. Neil, our local co-host is available to help or answer any questions. His contact information is in the guestbook. This is a quiet, residential neighborhood with a friendly community. There is a store and 2 small cafes just 10 minutes away in Kalapana, but the closest supermarkets and restaurants are 20 minutes drive away in the quaint town of Pahoa. Apart from Uncle Robert's, nightlife is limited to the chirping of coqui frogs. If peace and tranquility appeal, this is the right place for your vacation. The closest airport is in Hilo, approximately 45 minutes away. To travel out to Kehena, and to travel into Pahoa for shopping and restaurants , and to see all of the local attractions you will need to rent a car. Public transport is very limited. Figure on a 2.5 hour drive from Kona Airport. Rental cars can be difficult to secure last-minute so we recommend you reserve one early. Hale Kupu is our home when we're on island, and when we're not, we make it available to guests. As grateful residents of this lovely island, we comply with all local rules and regulations. So: 1.All rental rates include Hawaii State GE Tax from 1 Jan 2022(4.5%) and TA Tax (10.25%) and Hawaii County TA Tax (HCTAT) (3%). Tax ID numbers GE-096704716801 and TA-096704716801. 2.Hale Kupu is registered with the County of Hawaii as a legal vacation rental property. Our license numbers are PL-NUCR-2023-001496 STVR-19-365016 and NUC-19-1723. Permit valid until 05/14/2024. In Hawaii, homes may not be offered for short-term rentals unless they have complied with a rigorous vetting and licensing process. Mahalo for respecting our county rules! Please note that the surf and the trail to Kehena Beach can both be very challenging. Please be aware of strong surf. No lifeguard. We live in a verdant tropical rain forest, teaming with life - including singing frogs, geckos, and insects. You will encounter our local fauna while visiting Hawaii.
