Off-grid living in the jungle but still conveniently located. My little cabin is fifteen minutes from Hilo and the airport and is centrally located to Volcano National Park (25 minutes), Puna and Red Road (35 minutes) and the Hamakua Coast (35 minutes). Excellent location to enjoy all the amazing sights and activities here on Big Island. This is a solar-powered and rainwater-fed sustainable living dream. There’s also a Chevy Bolt electric car for rent that you can fast charge nearby. Enjoy paradise as it was meant to be enjoyed! This is a one-room cabin with luscious outdoor shower on three acres about 15 minutes from Hilo airport and centrally located to all that East Hawaii has to offer, from the lava flows in lower Puna, to the gorgeous cove beaches near Hilo, to historic Hilo town, to the beautiful Hamakua Coast, to the active Kilauea volcano. And it's only an hour and a half to the Kona coast for the more touristy part of the Big Island and all that that part of the island has to offer. My comfortable tiny cabin is an example of sustainable entirely off-grid living in Hawaii. It has a solar system and batteries for power (with normal 110 volt outlets), water catchment for water, a lava rock outdoor shower with hot water (propane, yes, there is some fossil fuel use even here), and a rainwater-fed outhouse with a flushing toilet for doing your business. There's also a garden growing various veggies and fruit that you're welcome to graze from. There are roosters nearby (about six lots over) that can be quite loud in the morning, as well as other birds singing in the morning. So if you’re a light sleeper this place probably isn’t for you. I'm biased, but this tiny house makes me very happy just hanging out. I used to live here part-time and work on writing projects or just putz around the place doing landscaping or home improvement. It rains regularly, a delicious warm rain, which keeps it lush and full of life. I liked it so much that I ended up buying another house not far from this house, where I now live permanently, and I rent this cabin out full-time. The kitchen is fully equipped with a two-burner stove, a medium-sized fridge and a large sink. It's a lot of fun to cook in! There are also a ton of little special touches that we've added over the years that guests often really enjoy. I won't spoil the adventure of discovering these for yourself. There are two other cabins on the property and I'll let you know what the schedule would be during your stay. The outhouse is a flushing rainwater fed outhouse. If guests are staying in the other cabin during your stay you'll share the outhouse but the rest of the space is yours. A one-room cabin (16x16), with covered deck (lanai, 8x16) that's a good size for one or two people. There's also a futon for guests to sleep over, and covered parking, as well as a covered gazebo outdoor area and lava rock shower that guests love. My property manager will be the direct contact in most circumstances. If you're interested in experiencing pristine Hawaii this is a great place to do it. My place offers the convenience of being only five minutes from Keaau, and only a few minutes from a 7-Eleven, the J. Hara Store (with the best fried chicken ever), and fifteen minutes from Hilo, but also out in the country with only one neighbor who isn't even visible or audible. Birds abound, as well as geckos and frogs. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance but use the smoke rings available in the cabin and you'll be good to go. Lava viewing (when it's flowing) is thirty minutes drive from the house and then a four mile hike or half hour bike ride (if you rent bikes). It's worth it! The Red Road area of coastal Puna is also half an hour away and is world class and just plain gorgeous. There are many yoga sanctuaries (Hawaiian Sanctuary, etc.) and workshop centers in this area, as well as rich jungle, local exotic fruits and a ton of other cool things going on. The 2018 lava flow hit the area pretty hard but it's bouncing back well. The areas you can now access that were hit by the flow make for some great sightseeing. In particular, the hike to Pohoiki from McKenzie State Park is a must-see since it's over a bunch of brand new lava and brings you past a bunch of brand new black sand beaches. Volcano National Park is 20 minutes away and is a must see. There are oodles of trails in and around the park for avid hikers. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the largest volcanoes in the world (with Mauna Loa still classed as active) are nearby and hikable. The Hamakua Coast north of Hilo is also a must see and an amazing scenic drive, particularly the Onomea scenic drive. Hilo town, just 15 minutes away, is the biggest city on the island (and the second biggest in Hawaii) and is well worth a visit, particularly to Pineapples restaurant or Moon & Turtle restaurant. Queen Liliuokalani Gardens is stunning with a mix of Hawaiian and Japanese aesthetics. Be sure to check out Coconut Island. There are also a bunch of nice small beaches and swimming areas as you drive east of Hilo. Definitely check out Richardson's Beach. Kehena Beach on the Red Road is a clothing optional black sand beach that is always nice for snorkeling or just lounging on the beach people watching. Sunday's go off in particular, with a large drum circle. Kona side of the island has its own mix of amazing beaches and resorts for a more traditional Hawaii feel. Scuba diving is good all over but most tours leave from the Kona side. Mauna Kea Resort beach is our favorite. It's open to the public even though it's a private resort. The nearest bus stop is about a mile and a half away. There are also cabs and Uber and Lyft (as of March 2017). It rains on most days at least for a little, which is how it stays so green, usually in short heavy showers that give way to sunny skies before too long. It's almost always warm, though, so it's not an inconvenient rain like it is in colder climates. Low 70s to low 80s is the temperature range all year 'round, but it can get a little colder at night sometimes. This is the tropics so there are plenty of bugs (ants, cockroaches, beetles, mosquitoes, etc.) as well as geckos and various other small creatures that abound, so if you're squeamish about bugs and other small critters this is probably not the place for you. Cell phone reception is good for most carriers except (even AT&T), which doubles as computer Internet access for those with iPhones or other smartphones that can tether to your computer. As of October 2022 we have Starlink satellite wifi installed and it’s very fast. In terms of power, the house is fully wired like a normal house with outlets, etc. The solar panels and batteries provide enough power for all of your needs unless you get a number of very cloudy days in a row, which is rare but can happen. And if that does happen there are plenty of candles and kerosene lamps to add to your romantic ambience.
