This home is obviously unique and has even been featured on HGTV's Off Beat American & The Travel Channel, but it is the land itself that we fell in love with. This all-concrete house is ocean front and perched on a lava cliff at Kehena Point. The Point sticks out into the ocean further than the surrounding lava cliffs and offers unparalleled views of the coast in both directions. Watch whales in season (November-April), and walk to a black sand beach. This ocean front home evokes the feeling of staying in a converted lighthouse. Perched high on a lava sea cliff, the crashing waves below add a dramatic element. This is a three story all-concrete house. Like many Hawaiian homes it is rather small, despite its considerable height. Enter at the middle floor with a living room/dining area and fully equipped kitchen as shown in the photographs. Up the spiral staircase is the master bedroom with ensuite bath with walk-in tiled shower. A sliding door leads to a private lanai. The upper lanai is perfect for star-gazing, whale watching, and sunning. Going down to the ground floor is the second bedroom and ensuite bath, with sliding doors to the lawn. Both bedrooms have queen beds with high quality linens. There is a third queen bed in a loft above kitchen. You must climb a vertical wall mounted ladder to access this space. It has low ceiling clearance and is suitable only for those old enough to safely climb the ladder, yet young enough to still want to do so. The home is most comfortable for 4 or fewer people, although it can sleep 6 if your group includes at least two people who do not mind the inconvenience of sleeping in the loft. All the rooms have sweeping ocean views from numerous oversized windows making it seem almost as though you are outside. This intentional design feature is striking and unforgettable. The lawn and garden area provide numerous areas to relax and enjoy the view or sunbath. There is an outdoor beach rinse with stunning views of the ocean and coastline. This area of lower Puna is lush with forest canopies, papaya fields, and filled with old-fashioned Hawaiian charm. It is also where Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of volcanos, has been the most active over the last 50 years. It is less than 8 miles to the most recent lava flows from the summer of 2018. Just 15 minutes to quaint, colorful Pahoa town with its many great restaurants, boutiques, and stores. About 45 miles to Volcano National Park and 35 miles to Hilo. Kehena Black Sand Beach is the closest swimming beach and is only a short walk from the house and is visible from the Point. Kehena beach is clothing optional and you must be able to descend a hiking path to reach the beach. Kehena Point is the perfect getaway for someone who is looking for a unique, somewhat funky experience. As one of our guests remarked, "Leave your heels at home, immerse yourself into the laid back, poncho wearing, hippie friendly community." Enjoy whale watching in season and swim with the spinner dolphins at Kehena Beach. Enjoy Uncle Robert's weekly Wednesday night farmer's market with live Hawaiian music, Awa Bar, food, and artisan booths. P.S. If you have the time consider staying a week or more. The weekly discount and single cleaning fee substantially lower the per night cost and it gives you time to really experience this corner of paradise. Full and private access to the entire home, garden, and sea cliff. We offer personal check ins. We have a local co-host that is available 24/7 to ensure your stay is wonderful and problem free. Kehena Beach is a lovely and eclectic community. Lots of farms that produce organic food. Artists, hippies, and retirees all come together to form our delightful neighborhood. There is a Sunday commuinty drumming circle at the beach. Uncle Robert's night market on Wednesday. Plenty of great restaurants in Pahoa. Beautiful and untouched coastline trails to walk for hours. You must have a car. There is limited public transportation. There are limited (and expensive) taxi and Uber rides. The price of this home includes Hawaii County Transient Accommodation and General Excise taxes totaling approximately 19%. Those taxes are built into the price quoted to you by AirBnB. The amount you pay AirBnB covers your stay. The home does not have air conditioning, which is generally not an issue in our area which enjoys regular trade winds. We provide ceiling and floor fans for your comfort. A spiral staircase is the only access to top and bottom floors. You must be able to climb stairs to fully enjoy this home. We do not recommend using the loft area. The vertical ladder, low ceiling height, and lack of a bathroom make it very inconvenient. If you decide to use the loft, you assume responsibility for the safety of those you allow to use this area. The waves crashing onto the Point throw salt water into the air and the trade winds bring this sea spray inland often covering the house in a salt water mist. This adds to the sense of staying in a converted lighthouse but over time this is very corrosive making maintenance and upkeep challenging and we appreciate your understanding in this regard. TVs and other electronics usually require replacement every 18-24 months. New lights installed within the last several years appear much older because of the accelerated rate at which metal rusts in this environment. Windows can become coated. We do our best to clean the windows but you may encounter sea spray on windows during your stay. If you expect a modern luxurious home you may be disappointed. On the other hand, if you expect a unique somewhat funky experience reminiscent of staying in a converted lighthouse, you are likely to be delighted. Cell phone connections can be spotty and unavailable in areas. Best to have your cell phone able to connect over WiFi for uninterrupted service. A landline phone is provided. Our area of Hawaii is natural and mostly untouched. This means that wildlife abounds. Our ocean is teaming with life. We have birds, geckos, and insects. We do our best to keep them out of the house, but it's impossible to keep every living creature at bay. During your stay you may encounter the house gecko. Considered in Hawaii to be good luck. You may see all types of insects. Good thing is nothing is dangerous or can harm you. Like our locals, all living creatures here are very laid back. If however you have a bug phobia we ask that you carefully consider your stay. This house is registered with the County of Hawaii as a short term vacation rental. It operates under STVR-19-364970 and NUCR-20-1706. All short term vacation rentals in Hawaii County have the following Good Neighbor policies which must be adhered to: a. Guest vehicles shall be parked within the designated onsite parking area which is the driveway. Mahalo, Mike
