This 100 year-old home on 83 acres overlooks a beautiful meadow, surrounded by dogwood and maple trees -- breathtaking in spring and fall. The saline pool is open generally between April and October, and surrounded by an abundance of flowers. In the cooler months, an atmospheric wood-burning fireplace makes the cottage cozy. While this house is on a secluded property with a long driveway, it is convenient to many of the Hudson Valley's treasures. The house itself is furnished with an eclectic mix of original art, antiques and modern furniture. Open living and cooking space with amazing views of the private 25-acre meadow. In season, extensive gardens surround the home and pool. Wildlife abounds! (If you are interested in hawks or other wildlife, please let me know. I also forage for mushrooms, fiddlehead ferns, wild watercress, asparagus, apples, pears...in season.) The master bedroom has three sides of windows and unique, hand-crafted doors. Lots of light and naturally cool. The kitchen is fully-equipped, but bring your own food. French press coffee. Toaster oven, microwave. There is simple coal-fired grill but I prefer the "cauldron" -- something like a fire pit and a grill combined -- which is wonderful to watch the sunset by and prepare dinner. I live on the property (in a separate house) and am happy to introduce you to the area if I am around. I also have an affectionate English Setter who lives at my home behind my fence. He is very friendly and is usually just with me, unless you would like to meet him. The property is located about 1000 feet from the Hudson River and Esopus Meadow Preserve. There are half a dozen trails within a 5- to 10-minute drive. Located 15-25 minutes from New Paltz, Saugerties, Poughkeepsie, Rhinebeck, Red Hook, Woodstock, Kingston, Rosendale, High Falls, Highland. Train into Poughkeepsie (or Rhinecliff) is best public transport, but I would recommend having a car so you can explore the area. Over holiday weekends there is a three-night minimum possibly four or more. Sleeping arrangements include: 1 queen bed in master bedroom, and 1 queen bed in second bedroom. Sofa-bed and daybed in the main living room. Please note how many people you will be booking for, including children. Please let me know if you expect to be inviting additional guests to the house and property than what is in the "contract." Generally this is discouraged. Also, to be clear, please know that I am accepting you and your family/unit, not all the friends you know in the area. If you would like to invite anyone over, please ask in advance, especially if you plan to use the pool. Do not assume. Please note that Ulster County charges a 2% occupancy tax to you as non-permanent renters, which Airbnb collects. It is also registered with the Town of Esopus. In the summer, a magical pool is surrounded by an unbelievable number and variety of flowers which change every few weeks. The pool is between my home and the rental house, so we share the pool, which has rarely presented issues. In the winter, a wood-burning fireplace make things cozy. There is a "cauldron" (like a fire pit) for grilling and enjoying outdoors in the spring, summer and fall. There is also a grill you can use with charcoal for the less adventuresome. I am happy to give tips about what to do and see, if I am here, or before you arrive. As mentioned, I live in a separate home 500+ feet from the available house, so there is lots of privacy. If I'm here, I'm only a text away. We may be seeing each other at the pool, but generally I have found we can work around each other and I will make myself scarce when you would like to use the pool. There is so much to do in the area, although you may never want to leave this magical spot. Within minutes there are 4 reserves for 1-2 hour hikes, as well as Mohonk about 30 minutes away--with miles and weeks of hiking. There are also vineyards/ distilleries, lots of little villages (Rosendale, High Falls, Stone Ridge, Kingston/uptown, Kingston/Rondout, Rhinebeck, Rhinecliff, Red Hook, Beacon, Hudson) and fun restaurants, farms and farmer's markets, and a variety of festivals and events and makers fairs all year. Next door there is a picking orchard that has more than just apples and pumpkins in season. Kaatsbaan, Opus 40, Bard and Vassar have terrific music and theatrical programs, and every night of the week, music playing somewhere nearby (check out: The Falcon, Club Helsinki, Towne Crier, Colony Cafe, among many others). Notes on arrival provide lots of suggestions for half day and full day adventures, restaurants, trails. While the train takes you to Poughkeepsie, about 20 minutes away, I would recommend a car so you can get out and explore the area, pick up groceries, go hiking, local fairs and festivals, music, etc. Note that nothing is within walking distance! Feel free to ask me questions if you don't see your answers in the write up. You have the house to yourself, but we share the property, including the pool. My home is about 500 feet away from the rental house. Please note that for holiday weekends and weeks I will be looking for 3-day minimums. I am sorry that I have not figured out how to indicate that on the calendar.
