house of chambo offers self catering accommodation and a chance to explore the untouched beauty of lake malawi. 2 beach bungalows, simple as can be with white sand floors and double beds. views of the lake and sounds of the bush all inclusive! each room has a double bed, mosquito net and essentials. you are all welcome, everywhere from behind the bar, to the kitchen and out onto the beach! whilst i am not often at house of chambo, my two partners francis and patson live nearby and love to hang out! far from the main road, or any road for that matter, at house of chambo you can really immerse yourself in a fishing village on lake malawi. get to know the people and enjoy the natural beauty. getting to house of chambo in mala village FROM MOZAMBIQUE: OPTION 1: (minibus 2-3 hours, truck 4 - 6 hours, boat 1 hour) - take a minibus from lichinga to metangula, then a chappa(truck) to cobue and a boat on to mala village. OPTION 2: ( minibus 2 - 3 hours, ferry 4 - 6 hours, boat 1 hour or walk 3 hours) - take a minibus from lichinga to metangula and then a ferry up the coast to mbueca or cobue where you can take a boat or walk to mala village. it is also possible to get a private boat from metangula straight to house of chambo, this takes about 6 hours and costs $150. lichinga to mala can be done in a day. the private boat from cobue to mala is normally $25 for the boat one way. FROM MALAWI: OPTION 1 : (fly 45 min, boat 2 x 1 hour) - fly from lilongwe to likoma island, then take a daily boat to cobue and then a private boat to mala village. OPTION 2: (ferry 4 - 12 hours, boat 2 x 1 hour) - catch a ferry from one of the many ports such as monkey bay, nkhotakhota or nkhata bay to likoma island and then a daily boat onwards to cobue and a private boat to mala village. note: it is a 1 hour boat trip from likoma island to cobue for immigration that usually leaves around 12:00 and then a further 1 hour on to mala village by boat or a 3 hour walk. call to organize a boat or porters. the private boat from cobue to mala is normally $25 for the boat one way. food and beverage: patson runs 'mala lakeside bar' just down the beach and so long as there is a bit of sun, there are cold drinks! francis and his family do the catering and can provide most things from coffee and breakfast through to banana pancakes after dinner. popcorn at the fire and fresh grilled chambo fish is my favourite! house of chambo is remote but everyone will do their best to cater for you, however, please do let us know in advance if you have any requests. activities: if you want to just lie on the beach or go camping in the hills, snorkel and fish in the lake or have lunch on an island, its all up to you. guided activities are available.
