The Island of Hawaii is quite large and we recommend renting a car at least for a portion of your stay (the beginning or end) so you can trek to the other side of the island and see the Hawaii Volcano National Park, and explore waterfalls on your way back to Kona. Or spend a morning up north in Hawi hiking Pololu Valley, shopping in the small town and then hitting one of the world's best beaches on your way back to town. In town there is also a trolley that runs throughout Kona to a lot of the favorite spots.
