Experience the peace, beauty and serenity of living in your own home, with spectacular views of the Pacific and the tropical landscape of lower Puna: comfortable and easy accommodations and open-space living. Come experience the raw beauty of a lava eruption. The land has been transformed. Fissure 8 and the hardened lava flow is a 10- minute walk from our home. This is destruction & creation; We and the surrounding community of Puna have been transformed by this experience. Welcome to paradise! 1700 sq. feet of understated elegance and peace. Here is the perfect place to experience the magic of Lower Puna. Take your family or friends to a place that feels like home (Ohana) and that breathes in the spirit of welcome and love (Aloha). We have provided a fully-equipped kitchen. There is a Keurig coffee maker, French Press, regular coffee maker, microwave, Magic Bullet for smoothies, and necessary cooking equipment and condiments (olive oil, oil, basic spices and herbs, tea, coffee, sugar.) In the fridge you will find : bread, fresh eggs, butter and half-and-half cream. There will also be a platter of fresh seasonal fruit. Ohana Aloha sits upon a hilltop overlooking the Pacific. One hears the rustle of palm leaves, tropical birds and coqui frogs at night. The setting is truly beautiful and nurturing with a spacious lawn, fresh tropical fruits and vegetables, caressing breezes and even frequent rainbows. There is a deep sense of peace here. From May 3rd - August 3rd 2018 that peace was dramatically interupted by the lava eruption that took place throughout Leilani Estates, where our home is situated. About 40% of the homes were destroyed by lava. We were spared that tragedy because of our location that was in the opposite direction of the lava flow. You can view the immense lava field and the famous Fissure 8 from a ten-minute walk from our home. This is truly a unique, humbling experience: witness how nature can transform the land. We have lost some of our ornamental and orchard trees because we were downwind of the volcano. But nature is resilient; many trees are sending out new leaves and branches. We are replanting those trees that we lost. We have created a new vegetable garden that you may harvest. Beauty and peace is returning to the land. Our home is centrally located in lower Puna. The rustic town of Pahoa is five miles to the north; the Pacific is five miles to the south. There are many intentional communities a few miles from the house: e.g., Hawaiian Sanctuary (yoga, permaculture, and Hawaiian culture). The home is 40 minutes from the attractions of Hilo and about one hour from Volcano National Park. North of Hilo are the awesome Akaka Falls and the spectacular Hawaii Tropical Gardens. One could easily spend a week here and not see everything. Guests are encouraged to use us as a resource in planning their stay. We can recommend the best places to go swimming, dancing, yoga, massage, etc. There are a rich variety of places to eat in the area, which are included in a resource book (translated into Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Korean) that we have created for our guests. We love where we live and enjoy sharing our excitement. Sitting on the lanai or strolling on the property, one experiences a dance of tropical weather, an interplay of bright sunshine, billowy, drifting clouds, soft rain showers, and the sensual feel of trade winds. Make this place a home base for your exploration of lower Puna and the east side of Big Island. The price includes the following Hawaiian taxes: Transient Accommodations Tax: 10.25% General Excise Tax: 4.0% No security deposit is required. Guest Access This is your own space.. Your own private driveway (300 feet long) leads up to the house. You will need to open and close the gate when you leave the property when is dark. The living quarters are on the first floor, ten feet above the ground that allows for unobstructed views of the land and the Pacific from the lanai. We are here to help our guests have a great time. If you have any particular needs, you should contact us. Although we live on the adjoining property, you have your own private space. How much we interact is solely at your discretion. In our opinion, Puna is the most fascinating and lush area of Big Island. From Kalapana to Pohoiki, from the Red Road to Pahoa--you will be experiencing the richness of living in a tropical rainforest. This is the furthest eastern part of the Hawaiian Islands and has a special place in Hawaiian lore. It attracts those who are adventurous, seeking to expand their spirits, and desiring to live in harmony with nature. It is our belief that there are a very high percentage of mindful people who live here. You will need to rent a car, as there is limited pubic transport. The house is situated 10' above the ground, so you will need to be able to climb stairs. All of the living arrangements are on that floor, including washer and dryer. The carport is underneath the house. Beach equipment, beach chairs, buggie board, and floating noodles are available.
