On the beautiful Flores island of Indonesia, 27 kms east of Maumere, nestled right at the water's edge, sits the Sleepy Lagoon. Built traditionally from coconut wood and bamboo with grass roof, it's the perfect artist retreat or getaway holiday for couples or small families - sleeps 4 people. The Sleepy Lagoon is the 'big sister' to Lena House, owned by Didakus and Esy Stanislaus. The house is simple but comfortable and very spacious for four people. It sits right on a beautiful calm bay with gorgeous views to outer islands. Lovingly constructed out of local materials, it has a beautiful 'open air' feel to it. Huge shutters in the main living area open up completely to give a sense of merging with the outdoors, and to catch the sea breeze. A wide verandah provides protection from sun and rain, and plenty of space for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The main bedroom with queen sized bed is downstairs whilst upstairs on the mezzanine level are two single beds. Great views can be enjoyed from two upstairs viewing decks. The washroom is dual access - it's an ensuite downstairs with 'upstairs guest' entry via the kitchen and south side. The cold water shower is open plan Indonesian 'mandi' style but in a discrete setting with lovely view to the garden. The toilet is western style. Generator power is available during the evenings(usually from around 6pm til 10 pm). We also have small 12 volt solar system that powers a USB port (to charge small items like phone) bedside fans, and it also provides lighting for when generator is off. Guests have full access to the house, (including laundry with twin tub washing machine - washing powder can be purchased from local shop nearby) and access to the kitchen, for tea, coffee and snacks. A starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar and milk is provided. We recommend you purchase your meals through Lena House restaurant - they can be delivered to you, or else the restaurant is a short walk up the beach. The food, cooked by Esy, is fresh, delicious and very reasonable priced. A menu is provided in the information booklet at the house. Drinking water can be ordered in bulk (19 litre containers) through Lena House for approx US$3. We spend much of our time in Melbourne Australia, so most of our interaction will be over the internet. Fredh, our caretaker is onsite however, and is most helpful with your needs. Also, the Sleepy Lagoon is part of the 'Lena House' bungalow business next door, and all requests can be attended to by Didakus, Esy, and the Lena House crew. If we are in Flores at the same time as a guest booking, we will stay nearby in one of the Lena House bungalows. Wodong Village is a small community of mainly Indonesian locals, most of whom make their living fishing or growing crops such as rice or coconuts. There's a few tourist bungalows and hotels in the vicinity but the island is only just starting to open to tourism. This is not the place to come if you are looking for night life, gourmet catering, and lots of shopping! But it IS the place to come if you want peace and quiet, and to experience life amongst the friendly happy local people. We feel very privileged to have had the opportunity to get to know the community here, and it gives us a wonderful break from our hectic 'Western' life. The nearest airport is at Maumere, which is on the eastern side of Flores (the other end of the island to Labuan Bajo) The airport is 27 kms away from the Sleepy Lagoon . Maumere is a 1.5 hour flight from Denpasar, Bali. Taxi pickup can be pre-arranged. The Sleepy Lagoon is secluded from the main road, and access is via Lena House with a half km walk at low tide, or short trip across the bay by boat except in the peak of the wet season when boat is unavailable. Once here, you can hire motorbikes through Lena House to get around, or catch a local bemo (bus) which comes at regular intervals along the main road. For longer trips, car and driver can be arranged. There is no direct road access to Sleepy Lagoon - access from road is via Lena House and then approx 500 metre walk along beach to the house. Staff are always available to help with your luggage and any other needs including bringing meals to the house, and there is emergency access to the road if necessary, just not for every day purposes. There is no wifi access at Sleepy Lagoon. Best to buy a local SIM card (in Bali or Maumere upon arrival) and access data via 3G - very reasonable price to do so. If you buy SIM in Bali make sure that it will work on Flores ! Simpati brand is the best. Otherwise there is wi-fi (slow) available at Lena House 1- 500metres up the beach. The Sleepy Lagoon may not be suitable for toddlers, as the 2nd bedroom is upstairs. There is no safety gate at the top of the stairs. Feel free to contact to discuss further. Washing machine can only be used when generator power is on - staff from Lena House next door can do your washing for a small fee.
