The ohana house is nestled in 2 acres of an old coffee farm, that is now a tea farm, in the Orchidland subdivision between Pahoa and Keaau, 20 minutes from downtown Hilo, 45 min from Volcano park, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We cannot see the neighbors. Sometimes we hear them, but it is extremely quiet most of the time. Lots of birds and coqui frogs! Unfortunately, we have dogs, do some milling, and have medicinal plants so it's not really appropriate for small children. The space is a studio (1 room) with 2 king beds, and a futon couch. There is a camping oven with 2 burners on top in the kitchenette. The shower is outside, but still connected to the house. There is also a large lanai area to enjoy the outside. The bathroom is inside, and in it's own room. The WIFI recently received a major upgrade. I like to think that this is a place to get away from the daily grind, to relax in a private, secluded, quiet, rustic, lush tropical setting. If you prefer a hotel experience, then get a hotel. You are free to explore the Mamaki/Coffee fields. We also have a chainsaw carver onsite. There are several living spaces on the property, so we allow them as much privacy as we can. Guests are encouraged to avoid those areas. Feel free to say hello! I'm around a lot. I work from home, so I am available if you would like to talk to me. Flag me down if I'm out doing yard work. I sometimes need to get in the back room for maintenance, but there is a separate entrance. I am 1 mile from the General store and gas station. The main road to the rest of the Island is there too! It is a quiet neighborhood that is 20 minutes from downtown, and 25 minutes to Kahena beach. I am fortunate to have only one close neighbor next to me. Across the street and down a little ways are 3 horses. A car is recommended. They call it the Big Island for a reason! There is plenty of parking on the property. The Hele-on (County) bus line is 1 mile from the property. Busses in both direction every hour. We are "off grid", all solar powered. This means that guests are asked to conserve energy, including water usage. We take short showers. We are on catchment water for all of our showering, toilet, dish washing needs, but we get our drinking water from the RO machine at the corner, or from the county water spigots. We provide a countertop water dispenser for drinking water. We like to keep the gate locked most of the time when we're home , and always locked when we leave. There are rarely uninvited guests on the property. We have 2 dogs that are very sweet, and several cats that keep to themselves. We do poop patrol several times/day. We have a working farm where we grow medicinal cannabis (in addition to many fruits), mill logs from time to time, and do chainsaw carvings. If you would like to learn how to do any of these things, please lmk and I will put you in touch with Dale (the caretaker). I live next door so, if there is anything that I can do to make your stay more enjoyable, please let me know!
