Welcome to HALE HONU ~ the Home of the Sea Turtle ~ an amazing vacation home right on the water just 3 miles from Kailua-Kona! **** SPECTACULAR LOCATION!! UNSURPASSED VIEWS!! FABULOUS HOME!!

Hale Honu has a 4.9 Traveler Review rating from 60 of our Guests! Read on, you'll see why everyone loves this home, the original Kona 'Hale Honu'!

If you are looking for a unique private, oceanfront home, where the unobstructed ocean view and sounds of the waves will lull you away from all your cares, offered by experienced and trustworthy owners, LOOK NO FURTHER! YOU'VE FOUND HALE HONU!

Hale Honu is a two-story, four bedroom, three bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with extraordinary views of the ocean from all rooms of the home. The home is designed with an upstairs 3 bedroom/2 bath main house, and a large (600 sq feet) 1 bedroom/1 bath ground level studio/suite with a separate entrance. The upper floor 3 bedroom main house can be rented without the stuidio/suite on the ground level. Inquire about our rates for that option.

The entire house has undergone a major remodel upstairs, including all new windows, bedrooms and baths, kitchen, and exterior. The bedrooms each boast a 4 X 10 foot retractable Nana window that completely open to the ocean. It's like being on the bow of an ocean liner! The master bath has a jetted bathtub and a custom Mango wood vanity and vessel sink.

The upper lanai is 450 square feet of travertine tiled partially covered open air space with cable railing that is almost invisible and gives you unobstructed views of turtle cove, with its reef fishes and Honu (sea turtle) directly below, as well as out to the horizon. Flood lights create a dramatic scene of the surf at night.

The living room of Hale Honu opens completely with sliding glass panels onto the lanai, creating a contiguous open air space of the kitchen, living room, lanai and the ocean beyond. It's amazing!

This gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small keiki (child) friendly beach). A two minute walk takes you to MAGIC SANDS BEACH, the best white sand beach in Kailua-Kona, and famous for body surfing & boogie boarding.

Hale Honu is located just three miles south of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou shopping and cinema complex. Here you are close enough to everything but still in a world of your own!

The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within 6 foot lava stone walls. We have 6 padded chase lounges in addition to 3 sets of outdoor tables and chairs, love seats, and two outdoor futons. You can bask in the sun just meters from the waves or wile swaying the oceanside hammock for two.

When the sea is calm, there is excellent snorkeling at the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house. We enter the ocean right off the property. You can also easily enter the ocean from the always sheltered small beach at Pahoehoe Beach Park adjacent to Hale Honu. We swim with Honu (turtles) almost every time! A large lava shelf has excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide.

The main living area of Hale Honu ('the house') is upstairs, where there are two large bedrooms (king beds), plus a 6X10 foot 3rd bedroom with a full bed. Upstairs are two full baths, and a sunny, open kitchen and living area, leading to the covered 2nd floor lanai. The kitchen is a gourmet's delight with a 5-Star range, french-door refrigerator, lots of workspace and everything a serious cook wants. The 180 degree views of the Kona coastline are breathtaking from every window. You may never want to leave this spot!

Throughout the home there are open beam cathedral ceilings and nearly floor to ceiling windows making the home light and airy, with full ocean views everywhere. The sound and energy of the ocean is present in every room. Decorated with travertine tile and bamboo flooring ("Just say no to Rugs!"), Balinese antiques, island fine art and photography, as well as elegant tropical furnishings, you will feel like ali'i (royalty) in this home.

A favorite lounging spot is the queen sized futon on the upstairs lanai-perfect for a shaded nap or sleeping over the ocean!

On the garden/ground level is the fourth bedroom, the 'honeymoon suite'. It has been designed as a complete PRIVATE STUDIO/SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, outdoor garden, dining and relaxing areas. This large (650+ square feet) space includes a king-size bed romatically draped in privacy sheers, and a roomy living / sitting area with tropical decor, a dining nook, and private covered lanai at the oceans edge.

The suite has a complete kitchen with a cook-top, refrigerator and full sized sink. The bathroom has luxurious marble tile and glass block, and a walk in shower for two with dual shower heads. Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the ocean’s edge. Hale Honu studio/suite is also listed as a separate vacation rental at VRBO 46951.

Spend your evenings on the tiled huge ground-floor covered lanai in the Kama'aina (Local way ...barbequeing and talking story. This 400+ square foot outdoor lanai is filled with the sound of waves, trade winds, and Hawaiian ambience.

When rented in it's entirety, Hale Honu would be a PERFECT SITE FOR A FAMILY EVENT (reunion, celebration). The beautiful outdoor areas will accomodate a large party, with room for outdoor cooking/reception areas, seating, and spectacular ocean views.

We strive to make our homes and your experience in them unique and filled with the spirit of aloha. You’ll find the home tastefully decorated, carefully maintained, and filled with lots of extras; binoculars, books on local history and cultural sites.

Hale Honu imbues a special feeling of Peace and Aloha to everyone who visits it, and it is with that Aloha that we welcome you!

Please Note... We do offer this property for vacation rental in three different ways:

* Entire Home (including suite for a full four bedrooms and three baths)

* Upstairs Only (three bedrooms and two baths)

* Suite Only (one bedroom and one bath) (See vrbo listing #46951)

Smaller groups have the option to book only the upper floor, 3 bedroom main house. Those rates are not listed here (it's too confusing!), and we will provide you information and a quote for this option upon your request. Attached to this quote is our rental agreement, which contains a clause that you are responsible for damages due to your negligence and guarantee that with a credit card on file. If booking directly through VRBO, you are purchasing a damage waiver and paying a booking fee charged by HomeAway and VRBO. You may opt to book directly with us, in which case we may authorize a hold on your credit card for a "damage deposit" of $1000, which we void after your departure. The amount is not actually charged (or "settled") to your credit card but will appear temporarily in an online history (similar to the procedure when renting a car or hotel room). In ten years of offering Hale Honu there has never been substantial damage caused by a guest. Only a few times has the house been abused to the extent that we had to charge extra to cover the cleaning costs or replacement of damaged linens and bedspreads. We prefer to email you from our email account where we can provide you with pictures and links. Mahalo!

Very nice!

Firstly, I would consider myself very picky so keep in mind as you read this. We usually stay in condos at new resorts in Maui where everything is kept like a hotel. Staying in this house was very different, and overall I would recommend it. The pros: the location is great with two places to walk to for swimming/snorkeling and a bicycle rental station .2 miles away. The decks are beautiful and great to spend time together. Watching the sunsets from here was breathtaking. The house feels like a home because it doesn’t get emptied out like most condos do. It is outfitted very nicely with kitchen supplies and basics, towels, beach toys, etc. The owners did a great job labeling everything so you know where to find things and where they belong. The rooms and bathrooms are nice and comfortable. The beds are great. We didn’t use the 3rd bedroom upstairs which would have been the only one that is small with no bathroom. The downstairs studio is very cute and big. The jacuzzi was very clean and worked great. The bbq was brand new and it was fun to grill out. I loved having all the space compared to a condo and also being able to drive right up to the front door, especially when moving luggage or a car full of groceries. Some cons: there is no air conditioning except in the downstairs studio. The House has glass slots in every room that can be opened so that a good breeze goes through and leaves the house at a comfortable temperature except when it gets very hot outside. Then it gets pretty hot in the bedrooms, which heat up the most because they are directly exposed to the afternoon sun. After sun down, it cools off pretty fast with open windows, but at night you will have to choose between leaving the glass slots open for air at night, or closing them and hearing the VERY loud sounds of the ocean hitting the rocks. I read another review about the ocean “noise” and didn’t think twice about it as being a problem, but it really is much louder than I expected. As great as the ocean sounds are during the day, if you are used to sleeping in a quiet room, you will not sleep well here. Also, there are only light curtains that don’t block out the light, so expect to wake up when the sun comes out. With that said, we still had an amazing week in this house, and for the price it definitely met my expectations. Thank you Peter and Darla for sharing your amazing home with us, and for being great hosts.

Gate issues initially. Views spectacular!! Seemed casual and pleasant but very outdated decor.

Oven and hot tub did not work. Dishwasher smelled bad. Disposal backed up and would not drain even with plunger. Studio has several steps, difficult to manage especially at night. Magic Sands beach very close to walk to and great! Bedrooms are very noisy to sleep with waves crashing. Lots of outdoor chairs and towels available. Owner responsive to calls which good.

Great hosts and a great house for a family gathering

Peter and Darla are excellents hosts and were very flexible, responsive and supportive throughout our VRBO experience. Hale Honu is a great house. We rented both the upstairs and the downstairs suite for our extended family of grand parents, parents and grand kids. They offered the use of a playpen for our 17 month old grandson. The large living/kitchen and lanai overlooking the pacific was where we spent most of our time. We saw whales surfacing, dolphins spinning, turtles swimming and sun bathing and tons of tropical fish right from the lanai. The lanai was also a great spot to watch the sunset and lookout for the green flash! Peter and Darla offered a wonderful assortment of beach toys, chairs, umbrella's that we used daily to spend time at the beach right next door or Magic Sands a short walk away. It was a great stay at Hale Honu and we would definitely recommend it or stay again if our travels take us back to the Big Island and Kona.

Beautiful View, Cute House

This house really makes you feel like you’re in Hawaii... the ocean is right there when you wake up, and the deck is great for watching turtles and dolphin pods. The only downside is there were lots of bugs inside the house and the upstairs is quite loud from the waves (less relaxing than you’d imagine). With AC only down stairs you don’t have much choice but to leave the upstairs windows open. But the downstairs suite was a fantastic air-conditioned oasis with equally good views. Hot tub was fabulous for a late-night beverage and ocean-gazing.

Best Location - Wake up Every Morning to Pure Paradise!

I worry when booking a private condo or home that "on the water" may mean something other than on the water. This wonderful home is really on the water! The amazing lanai provides spectacular, unobstructed views of the sunset. There is a wonderful little pebble and sand beach right to the left of the property allowing for ocean entry for a swim or snorkel. We snorkeled here every day and saw turtles off of our porch and on our snorkel trips every day! One turtle even beached to sun herself between my kids as they played in the sand. Truly amazing. I was worried about the lack of AC, but this was not a problem for sleeping at all. The kitchen does get a little warm if you are cooking with the oven, but WHO CARES! I only mention this to help with the grocery shopping planning. If I come back to the Big Island (and I hope to!) I will arrange my trip around the availability of this home. Our whole family loved it. I can't imagine staying in a hotel when you could stay here. We had breakfast on the patio every morning, but could barely swallow for all the "ooooohing" and "aaaahhhhing". Peter and Darla are great hosts and made us feel so welcome. I almost hate to post this review because I want this place all to myself!! So glad Darla and Peter do not feel the same way and are so kind as to share this amazing place. I saw that one reviewer was concerned about the sound of the ocean being loud. The ocean sounds may be one of the most amazing things about this property. In hindsight, I should have recorded the sound to put me to sleep later! This place was perfect for our family of five. We also rented the downstairs so that my brother's family could come and go. Perfect!

Hale Honu is an ideal choice

Now that we are back on the mainland I'd like to thank you for making your beautiful house available to us. It was my 70th birthday and I had decided to bring my entire family, my wife, my first son, his wife and their three children, my second son and his wife (they got married on July 1st) and my daughter. We all had a great time in the house, dining on the lanai, watching the sunset, going to beaches, the volcano and to Mauna Kea. Both the main house and the studio were ideal for our stay. Kitchen fully equipped, beach amenities, beds, towels, etc. all perfect. The proximity to the White Sands beach made it a favorite for the kids. We’ll have pleasant memories for a long time.

Fabulous place to stay

We had a family vacation at Hale Honu recently & found it fit our needs perfectly. My wife & I stayed in the downstairs studio while our 3 adult children & spouses shared the upper floor. The sound of the waves rolling onto the lava rock shore was very soothing. The view of the ocean was wonderful with yellow and black schools of fish easily seen. The biggest shoreline treat was watching the sea turtles right off the patio & balcony come in to shore to nibble algae & seaweed. The location was perfect for us with a short drive to Kona town with its shops & restaurants. The house is in excellent condition with plenty of beach toys, boogie boards & snorkeling masks. The house was spotless with plenty of bath & beach towels. A creamy soft sand beach is just a block away to the south and was a great place to swim, boogie board & body surf. Snorkeling the reef just off the shore of the house was fantastic with lots of different fish, coral and sea turtles. We were there 10 days & felt at home from day 1. The owners, Peter & Darla, were very responsive to our questions & provided an excellent info package about the area & the island. I cannot imagine a better place to stay in Kailua-Kona

excellent family vacation

Loved this house and the location. Incredible snorkeling and body/boogie board surfing. Our 8 and 6 year old grandsons had a ball, as did all the adults. The view of the ocean is magnificent from all rooms. We had the entire house, including the suite downstairs, and it worked out beautifully for all 8 of us. Plenty of toys. Great dishwasher and washer/dryer. All you'd ever need in cooking "gear." We had some terrific day trips, so the location on the island worked very well for us in terms of what we wanted to see. Peter (host) gave us plenty of good info on places to eat, beaches to visit, etc. Couldn't have asked for a better vacation, in large part due to the house (and my great family!!!) Loved the turtles; saw them every day. I snorkeled with one and my grandson swam with one in the surf! Can't ask for better memories than that!

Great place for a family reunion

We had a wonderful week with my two brothers and their families. We had 11 total - the adults stayed up on the second floor and all the kids bunked down below, which was a great setup. Hale Honu is perfectly situated right on the ocean and we went snorkeling almost every day right in front of the house, or next door at Magic Sands. We ate in a lot and used the BBQ grill and 2nd floor deck to eat dinner and watch the sun go down. Peter and Darla have stocked the laundry room with tons of snorkeling gear, boogie boards, beach towels, etc. so you don't need to bring anything - and their instructions are really meticulous and detailed. Only thing I would caution is if you are a light sleeper, the ocean is pretty loud, especially if you have to leave the windows open because it is hot. For us it was not a bother and I would not hesitate to come back in the future.

Wonderful venue for a family vacation

We had a great stay at this house. We were there for 6 nights and had six people with us. There was plenty of room for everyone to feel comfortable and not cramped and for one of our couples, it was their "babymoon" so a lot of privacy for them in their own suite worked out perfect. We were able to see whales off the top lanai one morning and they were breaching which was very cool. Several turtles were easily seen each time we went snorkeling as well as lots of interesting fish species. Peter and Darla did a great job of having everything documented as to where to find things at the house as well as favorite destinations on the island and directions as to how to get there from beaches to activities to dining suggestions. Everything was close by (within a 10 min. drive from most shops and beaches). We were able to go running several times while we were there as directly in front of the house was the road with very wide shoulders and the views along the ocean front were incredibly wonderful. There were also several "toys" that we were able to use such as body boards, fins and snorkels, plenty of beach towels and chairs for the beach. Overall, everyone had a wonderful time and I would highly recommend this location. The only caveat I would warn someone about is just be prepared for the surf of the ocean being pretty loud. Just know that going in and you'll be great.

Paradise on Earth! - Hale Honu Kailua-Kona

My family and I rented the entire property...both the downstairs studio and upstairs unit. Both were equipped with everything we needed and then some. The owners were very responsive and have thought of everything. This was by far the best vacation I have ever taken and look forward to returning to Hawaii and this property! Thanks for making this such a memorable family experience!!!

Hale Honu Kailua-Kona

You cannot beat Hale Honu's location and amenities. The upstairs is very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped. We didn't want for anything. The hosts also provide access to their beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards and snorkel gear. Whatever you need for the beach, they have it. The house and grounds were very clean and well decorated. We loved having coffee on the lanai and watching the turtles and fish just below. We snorkeled easily from the beach next door to in front of the house to check out the sea life we enjoyed watching during morning coffee. Magic Sands beach is a 3 min walk and great for boogie boarding and body surfing. Lots of great food and shopping a short drive away. You can't beat the location for the price and its amenities. We would go back without hesitation. Darla and Peter were great hosts throughout our stay and made everything very easy.

Access , Adventure and Amazingly Accommodating

Hands down, one of the best places our family has ever stayed! This place met and exceeded beyond our expectations of a vacation home for a family. Having the upstairs space and downstairs studio with full amenities was perfect for everyone to be together and have their own space. This space offered 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens with all the kitchenware you could think of , 3 bedrooms , living spaces, 2nd story porch , downstairs huge porch, hammock , hot tub on the water , and for the adventurers all the water sport equipment you could want. I'm talking snorkels, flippers, boogie boards, beach toys, food coolers , beach umbrellas, beach chairs , bamboo beach mats etc! This place is also fully stocked with towels, and beach towels. One of the most amazing things here also is that the ocean is literally crashing on your front step. The sound is so beautiful, and exhilarating. Just imagine an ocean sleeping soundtrack all the time, its so nice. There are beaches close by on either side, where you can swim, snorkel , surf or just lay out in the warm sand. This water by the way is amazingly temperate, some of the most amazing surf I have encountered. For all adventurers there is an abundant amount of sea life in constant flow; sea turtles every day , dolphins , a huge variety of fish and some beautiful coral reef. Use the binoculars provided to get a better view. We had a car and were able to get to restaurants, grocery stores and sights all in under 20-40 minutes depending on where you were going.

Location, location, location is probably what summarize Hale Honu best! This was our first experience on this Island and from what we were able to see, Hale Honu was probably one of the best location available on the Big Island. It offered proximity to downtown (3 1/2 miles) where most of the shops are located and only a short distance away from major grocery store and shopping center. There was 5 of us in our party and we had rented the whole house. The fenced property allow for all the privacy and the noise from Alii Drive was never an issue. Since we had both floor of the house, we had more than enough space and the property offered all the amenities one can ask for. The sound of the surf crashing on the lava at the front of the property and the view was all the entertainment we needed and it was so relaxing that we never even use the television. The view from the upper lanai was just spectacular with whales, dolphins and turtles being center stage every day. We spent hours every morning and every evenings just looking out for them and we were never disappointed. We saw hundreds of whales and dolphins that provided us with front row seat to unbelievable shows; from just swimming along the coast, to breaching, tale slapping, jumping and spinning. Wow, it was like watching Discovery Channel live.... Unfortunately, the surf was very high during our stay which limited the amount of snorkeling we were able to do but this was the call of mother nature and it had nothing to do with Hale Honu. I don't know yet when we will be returning to the Big Island but Hale Honu will certainly be at the top of our list as a place to stay. Don A.

New Years Week in Kona

We held our family vacation at Hale Honu with nine adults and teenagers from two families. We used both the upstairs and the studio which provided a bit of separation for the older teenagers. We had read about the ocean views at Hale Hanu and we weren't disappointed! Hale Hanu is on a slight point in the coastline, providing an excellent vista. We toured up and down the Kona coast and never found a better place to sit and watch the ocean making us wonder why we ever left! Perhaps it was because we were there so close to the winter solstice, but the view from the hot tub was straight toward the sunset and perfectly framed by two palm trees! It couldn't have been a better hot tub view if it were in a postcard. We also appreciated the binoculars provided in each unit. There were daily sightings of dolphins, whales, and sea turtles. The house was well stocked with comfortable furniture, towels, and beach gear (even new boogie boards). The owners were available any time we had a question and some confusion we had with the trash service was cleared up immediately. The beds were very comfortable. The only thing we needed to get accustom to was the all night roar of the surf but once adjusted it became a wonderful sonic dimension of this relaxing home. Now I hear the surf every time I think about the place. The location was convenient for going into Kailua-Kona, local beaches, or the grocery store.

Incredible stay on the Big Island!

Beautiful home that worked out perfectly for our first time on the Big Island. Seven in our group, very comfortable. Newlyweds got the lower level suite, and Mom, Dad, two brothers and Grandma stayed upstairs. The house is everything Peter and Darla described. Every day we saw turtles from the lanai or out the bedroom windows. Easy walk to snorkel. Kona is a great base camp to explore the entire island. After being gone several hours, we were so spoiled to return to Hale Honu and truly relax. The evening we arrived, I needed some guidance and sent a text to Peter, who immediately called me and answered my concern. I knew if I needed anything he would be easily contacted and fix any problems. The rooms have extremely comfortable beds, plenty of storage, and the kitchen is wonderful. Staying on the coast was amazing, with daily views of turtles, colorful saltwater fish, unbelievable sunsets, and overall just an amazingly relaxing place to hang out. Thanks Peter and Darla!

Hale Honu

We have just arrived home from 2 weeks at the Hale Honu house. I must say Peter and Darla are accommodating and easy to deal with. We loved the location of the house and you cannot get any closer to the water. We rented a vehicle and mopeds as there is not a store close by, which is exactly what we wanted. We loved the crashing surf and were mesmerized by it every moment and found it did not bother us at night but be aware that it is not a quiet lapping shoreline if that is what your looking for. You will not find this anywhere in this area of Kona if you want to be close to the water. The only negative we found was that the lanai furniture and cushions were well used and "tired". For the money we also would have appreciated good pillows and nicer sheets. The beds were very comfortable. The 2nd bedroom needs screens replaced as moths seemed to get in easily. Overall we would stay here again and certainly enjoyed our trip.

Kona oceanfront paradise

Hale Honu, House of the Turtle. Right on the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, about 3 miles south of Kona. Five of us stayed on the top floor in 2 large and one small bedroom. The photos representing the accommodations on Trip Advisor and VRBO web sites are very accurate. Communication with the owners was very straightforward by email, and overall the value for what we paid was excellent. Our relaxation highlight was a large open porch right above the ocean from where we enjoyed Green Turtles and Yellow Tang swimming in the clear water below. Out in the ocean, usually less than a mile offshore, Humpback Whales were seen everyday, often breaching. In the beginning it was too rough to snorkel, but toward the end of our stay we got several days of excellent snorkeling, and saw several turtles underwater, as well as a great number and variety of tropical reef fish As far as creature comfort, the two large bedrooms both had magnificent ocean views. The beds had new firm mattresses, the two bathrooms were clean and well equipped, the kitchen was very well furnished with pots and pans, utensils, plates, salt, pepper and spices, cups and glasses, which even included very nice wine glasses. The refrigerator was new and large, easily holding three or more six packs of beer. The stove was also new and large. There were guests in the smaller first floor apartment, but we rarely saw them, and never heard them. The property is gated, so we always felt very secure.

My Perspective Since I Was Mentioned in the #6754697 Review

Our stay at the studio at Hale Honu was spectacular. Our view was absolutely amazing. Every day we watched turtles and fish from our patio. Every few days, dolphins would swim by leaping into the air with what appeared to be pure joy. In the evening, the sunsets were breathtaking. Our studio was clean, comfortable and attractive. I can't begin to express what a fantastic experience we had at Hale Honu. Peter, our host was extremely gracious and generous. He truly embodies the Aloha spirit. He went out of his way to make our stay very pleasurable. I want to speak about the centipede in the studio. When I was told that the neighbors were having some problems with insects and a rodent and that the owners were going to spray around the house, I emailed Peter and begged him not to spray around our studio. I was aware before I rented the studio that they used a light touch regarding the use of sprays. I was very happy about this fact. I appreciate that our neighbors had different needs, but I want to be clear that it was at our request that only a few baits would be used around the studio and not spray. Peter didn't have to do that, and I was extrememly grateful that he was willing to accomodate everyone's needs. Sometimes weird things happen, but I don't consider this Peter's fault. Our whole stay was extraordinary and we can't wait to go back to the Hale Honu Studio. I think that it would be so sad if someone decided not to stay here because of that centipede incident. This is a very magical property. I hope that you give yourself the chance to stay at Hale Honu.

Hale Honu House

My family and I stayed at this house "Hale Honu" for 10 days. Although the location of the house was outstanding - right by the water, I'm afraid we would never stay here again. I am not one to complain, but felt the need to share my experience with other potential guests to beware. The house had insects, i.e.. ants, cockroaches and a rodent. And the neighbor downstairs got bit by a centipede the last day of our stay. I am well aware of dealing with insects on the island, but to charge the kind of prices the owner is asking, and then not continually maintain pest control was shocking to me. Although the owner apologized and sent a pest control person out within 2 days, you have to ask yourself, "is this really what you want to be dealing with on your vacation and at these prices?" Next time we will stay at an upscale hotel for the same price, minus the insects and rodent.

Yes...another 5 star review!!

It was perfect! Everything...location, all the necessary things we needed, space for everyone, did I mention location?! Breakfasts on the patio watching the turtles and dolphins and you could even see the fish because the water was so clear. The huge kitchen was a great gathering spot, as was the downstairs lanai. Gated parking was a bonus and the outdoor shower was a necessary luxury!

Absolutely Amazing!!!

We just got back from a wonderful stay at the Hale Honu house and I can't say enough good things about the property. We had 4 children and 2 older adults that traveled with us. Our family stayed in the main house and my in-laws stayed in the studio below. The upstairs home boasts amazing views with bedroom windows that fully open to the ocean. We spent much of our time just looking out each window and not wanting to leave the house! The turtle house is truly that, we saw 2 or 3 of them out the windows each day. The water is so clear you can just watch them swim in the waves. One morning we observed about 14 dolphins jumping with some snorkelers for almost an hour right out from the lanai. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen! The house itself was well stocked with almost anything you could ask for to live in a home let alone in a vacation rental. The kitchen had every appliance you need to cook a great meal and all of the dishes you need were all there. The dishes were actually really nice, not typical rental property hand-me-downs. The touches in the home were all obviously upgraded. The shower and sink were the perfect island theme. (Yes, I am a visual person, pretty is important to me). In the laundry room there were umbrellas, beach chairs, coolers, boogie boards, sand toys etc.. One morning the microwave started smoking and sparking when we put something in it. We gave Peter a quick call to let him know what had happened. We were out of the house for a couple of hours and when we got back there was a brand new microwave in the old one's place. Talk about fast service! The hot tub overlooking the ocean was a nice bonus after a day of hiking. They had someone come and service it while we were there so it, along with everything else, was being well maintained. The ONLY thing I could think to change about the house would be to add air conditioning. The ocean breeze at night is perfect but it could get a bit muggy in the day. We are a family who likes our cool climate control! I was so sad to leave and I am hoping Peter and Darla will adopt me or at least hire me to be a caretaker for their amazing home! We loved it so much we are currently looking to relocate! :)

This is the bet location in Kona. The ocean front home gave us a perfect sunset every night. We were a family of 7 so we rented the whole house. Everyone had a place of their own. Close to town and a local grocery so we cooked many meals at the house. This is one we will rent again.

Magical Family Trip

My family and I stayed at Hale Honu for 10 wonderful days! There are no words to express how beautiful this property is! In the video that is on there website they say it is like standing on the bow of an ocean liner, it is much more than that! The house is filled with everything you need and more! The sound of the constant waves and all the magical sea life from sea turtles to spinner dolphins we saw daily, it is like you have your very own piece of ocean! I would definitely recommend this property to everyone. It was so sad to leave, but I hope to return one day!

A Dream Vacation

Hale Honu, House of the Sea Turtle, was more than a home away from home. It was our home for nine glorious days. We rented the house and the honeymoon suite between three couples. The video and pictures do not do the home justice! It is even more beautiful. Hale Honu is perfectly situated on the beach, with a beautiful park on one side. The views are amazing! We were very close to the downtown area and all that it offers. It served as a great hub as we ventured out to the different parts of Kona by day and came home to our beautiful beach house at night. No matter when time we pulled into our home, we sat on the porch and watched the ocean do her thing. Always magnificent! We stocked the large refrigerator and pantry twice and prepared great meals often. The barbecue and jacuzzi were always available and easy to use. There were plenty of beach chairs, beach towels, beach umbrellas, boogie boards etc for us to use and we used them often. The premises is large enough our one could wander off and lose herself if she wanted to. I would highly recommend this home! We are already planning our next trip to Hale Honu, House of the Sea Turtle.

AWESOME - Hale Honu

The wonderful beach home, Hale Honu, on Ali’i Drive south of Kona, lived up to, and exceeded, all of our families’ expectations. Hale Honu itself easily accommodated our extended family, providing plenty of gathering space for the eleven of us, but also some of our “own space” for each of the three individual families. Whales, spinner dolphins, and sea turtles were viewed from the house as well as beautiful sunsets. The large bedroom windows open wide to let the sound of the crashing surf fill the room and put you to sleep. The boys enjoyed sleeping outside on the lanai every night. Snorkeling was excellent right at the ocean in front of Hale Honu. Pahoehoe Beach, immediately adjacent to the house, made for an easy access point in which to enter the water. The rocky underwater ridge and coral attracted an amazing array of colorful fish. Sea turtles were also encountered during most every snorkeling outing. On one occasion, my two sons and I were thrilled to spend as long as we wanted watching a large manta ray. What an experience! For variety, there is a different place to snorkel just a short drive to the south (less than five minutes) at Kahaluu Beach, which our kids nicknamed “the aquarium”. It provides a shallow area of calm water with wonderful coral and fish. We even saw several varieties of eels while there and of course the turtles. It is an area suited well for the beginner, although there are areas for more advanced snorkelers as well. Pahoehoe Beach, adjacent to Hale Honu, was a favorite place to walk each morning after breakfast to see what “treasures” had washed ashore during the night. The little beach was also the site of two brief, beachside wedding ceremonies at sunset on two of the nights we were there. We were “uninvited guests” as we watched the ceremony off of the lanai (outdoor deck) of Hale Honu. I think the fact that the locals have their weddings right there, of all the places on the island, indicates how magically splendid is the location of Hale Honu. A particular sea turtle seemed to enjoy Pahoehoe Beach as well, as it liked to crawl onto the beach and take a short nap in the sun every morning and afternoon. We would also take the very short walk south on Ali’i Drive, (no more than a five minute walk) to White Sands Beach. There the adventurous ones enjoyed body surfing and using the wake boards (provided there at Hale Honu). Those not so ambitious enjoyed sitting back and watching all the action at the sand b

If You Don't Know About Hale Honu Then You Don't Know About The Best!

Expectations exceeded at Hale Honu! What a nice beginning. The lights were on, the gate was open and beautiful floral arrangements were being delivered. A large bowl of produce from the farmers market was there to be savored. The whole house was available for our 11 family members to enjoy for 2 weeks this Feb. 2013. The lani was a great place to start the day with a cup of Kona coffee. We watched for whales, dolphins, sea turtles, long out rigger canoes and bright yellow fish swimming below. The living room had plenty of space for family time and a good place to go over plans for the day. The kitchen had everything and more one could want for preparing meals, snacks, barbeques and picnics for the beach. There was no "bumping elbows" in this kitchen. Of course we did not pass up the opportunity to eat at many local establishments. Enjoying not only the food but the scenery and the people. Bongo Ben's was a favorite with the ocean across the street and everything from macaroni and cheese, brewed iced tea, fish and chips, to melt in your mouth macadamia encrusted fish of the day. Recycling of plastic bottles and aluminum cans was easy. We had plenty of solar heated water. It is nice to know Hale Honu is doing their part. Nice little Pahoehoe Beach adjoined the property and was a perfect place for treasure hunting, watching the green sea turtle sun herself and a great entry spot for our experienced snorkelers to head out for some great snorkeling including colorful coral, sea turtles, beautiful fish and even a ray. A short 2 block walk to White Sands Beach for boogie boarding and body surfing. Even some entertaining acrobatics in the waves:) Plenty of boards furnished at Hale Honu. Kahaluu beach about 1.5 miles south had easy entry, calm water and the fish are amazing in their variety and abundance. The perfect place for a first snorkel. My 11 year old grandson and I swam here for his first snorkel and we both came out with big smiles on our faces. Then off he went full speed with some of our clan. The farmers markets, shops and more shops kept us gleefully occupied. A visit to a chocolate farm, seeing lava flow, ocean fishing, spas, helicopter rides, a visit to Pearl Harbor one could be as busy or relaxed as you chose. Walking over the beautiful bamboo floor to open the wide 10 ft window, hearing the surf pound and lava boulders clunk was a perfect day's ending. Our next visit to Hale Honu is already in our dream

Incredible vacation spot!

The house was amazing, everything was as described. All six of us (two older adults, two parents, and two kids) enjoyed the location. Close to town, but not in the middle of all the craziness of downtown Kona. It was so incredible to be able to sit on the lanai, watch the surf, and see the whales. The snorkeling around the reef in front of the house was also fantastic. We were sad to have to leave.

A slice of paradise for a 3 generation family at Hale Honu.

Our family was lucky enough to spend 10 beautiful days in Hale Honu. There were 9 of us including three generations. My 80 year old parents, my brother, sister-in-law and their seven-year-old and twin toddlers took the upstairs main house, while me and my 23 year old daughter took the separate apartment downstairs. Both units were lovely, clean and comfortable, with everything you might need for a great vacation. The bookshelves were stocked with travel books and novels. My brother who is a professional cook loved the very well equipped kitchen. It had everything we needed. There was plenty towels, and beach gear to use (boogie boards, noodles, snorkels, fins, beach mats etc). We loved spotting whales, dolphins, fish and turtles right from the lanai or from the fantastic hot tub, we watched for the “green flash” at sunset, and actually saw it twice! The sun sets directly in front of the house! The winds and surf were quite strong the first couple of days (Late January) but we were quickly told about local protected beaches that the kids would enjoy. After that the surf calmed down and we were able to get into the water right in front of the house for amazing snorkeling. Swimming with turtles in front of the house was thrilling. The location is great, with Kona town right down the road. We enjoyed driving to different nearby beaches every day (great beaches very close by in all directions). We were able to take an exciting daytrip to Hilo and Volcano National Park on the other side of the island. We also loved watching the yoga classes in the little park next door from the lanai, and went down for a closer view of the local hula classes. The owners were very accessible and always helpful before and during our stay. We were informed a few days before arrival that there was a problem with the refrigerator in the main house. Peter kept me up to date and made sure that we were provided with ice chests and an alternative refrigerator until the repairman could arrive on Monday to sort everything out. We were also provided with lots of helpful information about directions, local eateries, shopping, nearby activities that really helped us to have a great time. Hale Honu is really an incredible slice of paradise and I would be thrilled to stay here again if we are lucky enough to be able to return. I would definitely recommend this house without reservation.

Great Stay

Stayed at Hale Honu for five nights with my family and some friends. We stayed in the upstairs unit which overlooked the waves. It was lovely to wake up to sun on the water. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean and pleasant. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook fantastic meals. The location is very convenient and several times we walked down to white sands beach to catch the sunset. The house is near town and the owners gave us lots of insider information that enhanced our stay on the island. After staying at a big resort this was a welcome change.

A great week

Our three families had a Wonderful time at Hale Honu. Property was clean and had all the extra toucces that make a place great. Owner was responsive, and answered all of questions and was very helpful. The hot tub was not working the week we were there but it was also very warm that week so this was not a problem for us. Owner did offer to push the repair man to fix it. The only thing that might make the property better would be air conditioning. We saw turtles daily below the patio and swam with them on occasion. Sunsets were wonderful.

Best vacation destination

I've been all over the world, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Bahamas, Jamaica, England, Poland, Korea... I could go on, but this review is not about my travels it's about the amazing stay that I had at the Hale Honu. I love to travel and this trip, mainly because of the accomodations, ranks up there among the best if not the best. For starters the house is right on the ocean. The waves breaking against the black rock with the sunset as a background each night is breath taking. It's right next to a beach where there are tidepools that you can see fish and sea turtles. The snorkeling is top notch, although it's a little calmer down the road 2 miles for weak swimmers. All 4 of the bedrooms have a full view of the ocean that makes you forget that you have a job. My guests and I enjoyed our stay so much we're going to try and make it an annual trip. I wouldn't stay anywhere else... the Hale Honu has it all.

We stayed at Hale Honu for one week for a family wedding taking place on the island. The view from the Master bedroom was simply magical and transfixing. The house was stocked full of everything one might need to get by. The house fit our entire family very comfortably. My 85 year old mother was in the smallest room but was quite comfortable the entire trip. Everything was clean and there were many personal touches that added to the color & character of the house. We had a wonderful time simply sitting and watching the waves, snorkeling, and scouting for sea turtles. Would highly recommend a stay here and we would definately stay again!

Awesome Vacation Home on the Ocean

We arrived late Wed. evening and walked into a very welcoming home on the ocean. There were 7 of us and we loved everything about the house. We also rented the studio below the home and that too was perfect. Everything was as Peter & Darla had described. We were put to sleep with the sound of the ocean every evening, made wonderful meals on the gas grill and ate on the lani while watching the sun set. Many mornings we watched as the whales played for hours outside our house. Many large windows and lani's with views that were breathtaking. On a few occassions we also saw dolphins playing and almost every morning there were sea turtles right below our house on the rocks eating and basking in the sun. We had our 3 adult children as well as our two daughters boyfriends with us and the consensus by all was "it's the best vacation I've ever been on"! Would recommend this vacation rental property to everyone. Some day we hope to return to the big island and hope that we will be able to stay at Hale Honu once again. Peter & Darla were awesome and took very good care of us and all our needs.

The house was absolutely amazing. From the moment we walked in everything was just perfect. Peter and Darla thought of everything. The house was very well stocked with everything we needed. There was plenty of gear for snorkeling and body boarding. There were binoculars for whale, dolphin and sea turtle watching. Happy @ Hale Hona in Kona

The photo listings told the visual story, plus the description of this listing & its location told the storybook side of this great VROB. The owner, management & cleaning crew did everything to make our stay as comfortable & enjoyable as possible. "Thumbs up" for recommending it or for a return visit. Kona was close for shopping & a meal. The White Sands Beach was walkable from house.

Too Much Relaxation

Our family stayed at this vacation rental for 5 lovely nights in April, our last stay after several weeks on the Big Island. On our arrival at the Turtle House, we felt as though we had saved the best for last. The value here is in its location, private yet with access next door to a public beach, and comfort, the owners have thought of everything to maximize your enjoyment. The new accordion windows in the bedrooms are fabulous, allowing you to sleep as though you are out on the ocean. The kitchen is spacious, extremely well equipped, and there is a gas barbecue (not charcoal!). There are plenty of comfortable conversation / viewing areas on the property, and you can easily move from one to the next as your mood allows. All the rooms are screened (not all vacation homes are - we found out!) for bugs, a necessity in the evening. Parking is secure, bathrooms updated and spacious, and the beds are comfortable. The little extras in the home such as the stereo with numerous Hawaiian music CDs illistrate the care put into this property. I am reluctant to recommend vacation properties without a disclaimer as every family is unique in thier needs and preferences, but I can recommend this property without reserve - you and your family will be happy here. The only complaint I have is we were so comfortable, it took a great deal of effort to mobilize ourselves for any day trips! Don't miss the night dive/ snorkel trip with the Manta Rays - magical! Finally, the cleaning lady was cheerful and helpful, both on our arrival and departure.

What a BEAUTIFUL home. Can't say enough about it. Our family of 7 vacationed here in April. The house was well stocked, very comfortable, clean and just perfect. The location was ideal. We enjoyed the hot tub, the view, and the beaches right outside the gate. Peter and Darla were very nice to deal with. Great communication and very accomodating. We had a late flight and they allowed us to stay an extra 5 hours. The "charge" for the extra time...simple..."Would you please start the laundry (linens, beddding, etc.) for us". That was it. We not only started all the laundry but happily finished the laundry. If we ever travel to Kona again this is where we will stay. THANKS AGAIN! It was a wonderful trip.

Heaven on earth!

We brought the entire family to Kona for Christmas this year (kids, spouses and grandchild) and it was by far our best vacation ever! We let our son, his wife and baby have the studio which worked out perfectly. They had the privacy and quiet (for naps) that they needed while the rest of us took over the upstairs. Can't say enough about the view and the sound of crashing waves 24-7, it's enough to make you want to rush home from shopping/sightseeing just to sit on the deck and soak it in. Peter and Darla are wonderful to deal with, be it special requests, dinner suggestions, whatever you can think of. We had Christmas Eve dinner at Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill on their recommendation and it was something we will remember for a long time. Definitely will go back when we visit Kona again (hopefully soon)!! The house has everything you could possibly need while you are there, it is just lovely. Thank you very much Peter & Darla, hope to be in touch with you again in the future.

Best accomodations ever in Hawaii!!

Thank you Peter and Darla!! We had a fantastic time and much of that time was spent in your fantastic Hale Honu home! The view from the lanai alone is worth the price of the rental fee. The privacy this house affords is just what the doctor ordered. Private but close enough to downtown and shopping . We lost count of the number of turtles and tropical fish that can be seen right from the lanai. The lanai can also be a downfall for this property because it's hard to tear yourself away from the view when it's time to go out for dinner!! We used your snorkeling gear, beach chairs, towels and boogie board so we didn't have to rent any of that. Between my wife and I, we have been to Hawaii 8 times. This is our 3rd time on the Big Island (my favorite island). We have stayed in a hotel, a condo, a private home and a resort (Waikoloa Hilton) and your Hale Honu house was by far the most enjoyable place to stay!! We'll be contacting you in the future to stay there again!! Thanks again!!

Bit of paradise

Beautiful spot with tropical fish and sea turtles in your backyard, a beach as your neighbor, and wonderful ocean views as an alarm clock. There aren't many places in Hawaii nice enough to make you want to just stay home and sit around, but as long as you have some beer and a few friends, this is one of them.

Hale Honu vacation

Truth in advertising was certainly the case for our vacation at Hale Honu. Very centrally located to all of the Kona coast, but private and removed from the hustle and bustle, the little that exists, on the Big Island, Kona coast. Very functional, well organized, clean, and fully furnished for a casual, yet comfortable residence away from home. Very convenient to two wonderful beaches, with great snorkeling right at your fingertips. Definately recommended.

We recently (March 26-Apr 2, 2010) stayed in the full Hale Honu house with two families (7 people) and thoroughly enjoyed the house, the area, and the island (drove nearly 700 miles sight seeing!). Peter and Darla have put together a very good place to stay that puts you in close touch with the sights and sounds of the Big Island. This home is close enough to Kailua-Kona to easily be there when you want but not so close that you have to deal with crowds or traffic (at least we did not).We saw many turtles, fish, and crab playing/foraging in front of the house (literally a few feet away!) and enjoyed watching whales, surfers, fishing, sailing, and a cruise ship all from the house. Just a short walk away are three different places to swim, snorkel, body surf, long board surf, or sun bathe to your desire.A good place that has given us very good memories. Christmas in Kona with Family of 4 and 2 Grandmas

We rented the entire house from Dec. 21-26 and the location is glorious! One of my sons staked out the lanai as his bedroom, and the other took the little twin room and loved it. The two grandmas had their own rooms with fabulous views of the ocean and the sound of the waves to lull them to sleep. We took the "honeymoon suite" and enjoyed having our own space. We watched turtles in the waves and visited them on the adjacent beach. We did a bit of sight seeing - snorkeling with the Manta rays and visited the Volcano park, and it was great! We found we most enjoyed just relaxing at the house being mesmerized by the seascape and crashing waves. The owners are very helpful in providing suggestions for dining and gear for snorkeling and even guidebooks on site. We loved the Farmer's market up the road - yummy pineapple banana macadamia nut bread! The house could be improved by replacing dated carpeting with wood or tile floors in the common area upstairs, but all in all it's very comfortable and has everything you need for a week away from home - wish we could have stayed longer!!

Peter and Darla, At...

Peter and Darla, At the risk of repeating things that you have probably heard a billion times, our stay was amazing. The wedding, and sharing of such treasured memories by both families will never be forgotten. For some, it will probably be the last trip of it's kind, for others it will inspire the motivation to broaden their traveling experiences. On the last day that we were all together on the patio, whales displayed their entire body from the water, followed by several tail slapping maneuvers, unlike any that our visitors had seen, even on the boat tours. My nephews and nieces keep comparing this vacation to other trips that they have since taken, "It was fun, but no Hawaii!" We can not say enough in thanks for the opportunity to stay at your home for such a special time in our lives. Mahalo, Ryan & Marie Polito

We recently stayed at Hal...

We recently stayed at Hale Honu for one week in July with our family of five. Peter and Darla kindly rented their spectacular paradise complete with its live ocean surround sound and unbelievable views 24/7 from the widest open windows we've ever seen. Peter and Darla's attention to detail (both before, during, and after our stay) was evident in their prompt e-mails, labeled cupboards, comfortable beds, soft beach towels, stylish turtle artwork, and unique island accents in every room. They also offered all of those simple comforts of home like a blender for those strawberry banana morning smoothies, coffee maker for fresh brewed Kona coffee, 2 copies of The Big Island Revealed, blow dryer, huge refrigerator, water shoes, beach mats, first aid kit, ice packs, laundry detergent and more. Peter and Darla also provided a notebook filled with personal recommendations for nearby restaurants and all of their favorite beaches. Hale Honu has a lovely beach next door and we especially enjoyed watching the local surfers at Magic Sands Beach just a bit farther down the road. Every snorkeling spot they recommended was perfect and we all certainly saw our share of sea turtles. Our youngest son counted 27 of them during our stay! Not sure how Peter and Darla managed this but they also provided us with the clearest blue ocean waves below and the blackest night sky filled with zillions of stars above. This vacation was also our 25th wedding anniversary and we could not have imagined a more peaceful or breathtaking place to celebrate! We left a list of our Top 10 Favorite Things about Hale Honu in the Guestbook there. You'll just have to visit to read it and to see it to believe it! We've already returned to Hale Honu often in our minds and family conversations but we do hope to visit again. Mahalo and Aloha!

We got married at St. Pet...

We got married at St. Peter's church in July 2009. We rented the entire property so that our close friends and family could stay with us during the wedding. The house did not disappoint us!! In fact, I wish we were able to stay longer. The location was so ideal..it was very close to our church! We liked that it was far enough from the crowds but close enough to "go into town" and explore. Everything you need is close by...the grocery store, the little shops for gifts and such, restaurants and of course..the beach. A personal tip for the beach though...you will need water shoes. They have some at the house but we ended up buying a pair while we were there because we stayed on the Big Island for almost 3 weeks and took them with us to the Hilo side. But, it was great to hop over the wall and there you are...the beach! We LOVED LOVED LOVED the windows in the rooms, the way they opened completely so you can hear and see the water day or night. We often all sat around watching the sunset together chatting and laughing..it was such a special time for us. Hale Honu is a real gem. And thank you Peter..working with you was a breeze..no problems and very helpful. Mahalo..we look forward to staying at Hale Honu again!

Mahalo Peter & Darla for sharing Hale Honu with our family.(April 2009) Definitely right on the ocean! We were met by a green sea turtle on our first trip to the tide pools out front! Very relaxing home with great artwork and collectables. Wish we could have stayed longer. Close to everything. Lovely coastal area.

I would highly recommend this property for anyone who is wanting to be right on the ocean, the crashing waves are visible and audible from each room. I literally did NOT want to sleep because the sound was so awesome, although the beds were more comfortable than my bed at home. The house is all windows so you don't miss an inch of the spectacular views and the sunsets are stunning. I will remember this vacation forever. Would also like to add that these owners answer all emails and phone calls promptly, it was a pleasure to deal with them. I will definitely stay here again!

Dear Peter & Darla, Two words describe Hale Honu: causal elegance. We're a couple of travel professionals (writer & hotelier) who have seen it all, but we both agreed that Hale Honu was the best place we've ever stayed in Hawaii. In fact, during our stay, we spent one night at the ritzy Fairmont Orchid after their wonderful luau, but couldn't wait to get back to Hale Honu the next day. We're already looking forward to our next visit! Thanks again Peter & Darla.

With the help of Darla and Peter, our visit to Hale Honu was perfect. Once we decided to go to Hale Honu making the booking was very straightforward. Darla and Peter were able to accommodate our needs and even gave us tips on where to go for dinner and places to visit. Thank Darla and Peter for making our stay so wonderful. We stayed in the studio on the property, which is located just outside of the main tourist area of Kona. It is well situated and literally next door to a small sandy beach. It is only a few minutes drive to the heart of Kona and a 5 minute drive to a small shopping mall where you can find a grocery store, post office and other stores. The studio was well laid out and had wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean. Waking up to this view each morning was a magnificent way to start each day during our stay in Kona. The studio was well appointed in terms of conveniences. The kitchen was sufficient that it enabled us to prepare meals on days we did not wish to leave our beautiful surroundings. Darla and Peter make beach chairs, beach towels, snorkel equipment and a cooler available to their guests. These items certainly helped to make our stay more enjoyable. It’s not very often that you can go on vacation and have access to all the conveniences of home. The lanai for the studio was a wonderful place to eat breakfast, or any meal for that matter. It was also a place where we were able to lounge, read or just relax if we didn’t feel like setting off for a destination. Beyond the lanai is nothing but the blue perfection of the ocean. What more could one ask for than to sit and watch turtles float just beneath the cool surface of the ocean. Our visit to Hale Honu was certainly one of the most relaxing vacations we’ve ever had and we plan to return at the earliest possible opportunity. August 2008Jayne & Rob

All I can say is WOW! What an amazing experience, location and several days that I did not want to end. Had planned to visit the island more, but the home was so nice, we hardly left. The amenities, accommodations and location are one I definitely plan to visit again. Without a date. If you get a chance, definitely request this breath taking paradise. This was my first time to the Big Island and now don't have any interest in going back to any of the other islands. Just falling asleep to the sound of the ocean is the best medicine there is. Let alone the sunsets, turtles, the great beach steps away and being able to relax with a beer in the hammock. Aloha! Wendy

We like to think that we know Hawai'i,since we've been returning every winter since 1985, and have visited 7 separate isands. We've tried every possible location, including oceanfront, downtown, high rise, mountain-top, upcountry farmhouse, coffee plantation etc., and Hale Honu remains our favorite We have never found a better place to relax than the master bedroom at Hale Honu. The extreme proximity to the water, and the careful placement of the bedrooms, & bedroom windows, make this the only place where you can simply lie in bed all day, and have a perfect view of waves breaking over the lava outcroppings. We have bad backs, and spend much time in bed, and we believe that no bed anywhere else in the islands, can match the upstairs master bed for view, and convenience. Thats why we keep returning. We recommend it highly.!

We have really enjoyed your place. Have seen volcano, whales, dolphins, turtles, etc. Mostly great weather and a fantastic location on the island. Home could not be better located--and the views are unmatched. Ocean access is superb. We hosted our daughter and her family for a week in March--we were here almost a month-- and they were wowed by the proximity to the ocean. We watched the sunset every evening from the lanais downstairs. The home and studio are well furnished with everything you could possibly need for cooking, eating, playing on the beach or just relaxing. Being right next to a small park is a real plus Glad we found this place and would not stay anywhere else on this island.

Bring your camera! We stayed in the one bedroom studio. Beautifully furnished and one of a kind place with great views right on the ocean's edge. You can't get any closer without getting splashed by the waves. View turtles from back yard and enjoy the abundance of tropical plants and flowers in the immediate area. Owners were a real pleasure to work with and we had the opportunity to meet them and share dinner. Fabulous place and Fantastic Owners to work with. Gary from Phoenix

Great house - great location! We had a terrific week exploring the island & Hale Honu is the conveniently located no matter what the destination. The house is very comfortable, well equipped & there's nothing more relaxing than listening to the waves as they crash along the lava rock below. The numerous sea turtles are a wonderful bonus. We can't wait to return!

Our stay at Hale Honu was a fabulous experience. We were close to everything; dining, shopping, snorkeling beaches and the harbor. The views were unbelievable! What a treat to have breakfast on the lanai and watch whales and turtles swim by...all under a rainbow! We could even see the yellow tangs swimming in the water below us! Our group really enjoyed the hospitality of Hale Honu.

Gosh, where to begin. Stayed here with several friends in February 2006 and this place is absolutely fantastic! Literally steps from the shoreline where on sunny days you can see tons of reef fish (yellow tangs, etc) from the 2nd level porch as well as Honu and the occasional whale. Great waves in the beach park right next door. Very convenient to everything in Kailua-Kona as well. Will definately be a repeat renter here - the entire experience was worth it and truly made for the most memorable trip to Hawai'i yet!

We had a wonderful time at Hale Honu. You can't get any closer to the ocean than this. We sat on the lanai and watched the turtles by the rocks, the dolphins and boats on the ocean and were lulled by the sound of the waves. Accomodations were great, so much more than booking into a resort hotel room.

The Hale Honu is a treasure! We enjoyed seeing whales breach from the home, along with being entertained by some spinner dolphins. The home is very comfortable and the views of the ocean are spectacular. Let the waves lull you to sleep! We also enjoyed the hammock as we listened to the waves crash in. I'll be thinking of this vacation for many years to come:)
