The Frisky Fish is a small (two bedroom) waterfront cottage along with a SEASONAL boathouse/bunkhouse/artist studio/playhouse located in beautiful Bucks Harbor, Maine. It offers a unique vacation experience — smack in the middle of a real, authentic working tidal fishing harbor, surrounded by fishing activity. Although we admit, it’s not the location for everyone, it IS the perfect place for those looking for an authentic down east Maine experience and adventure.
***IMPORTANT INFO*** THIRD BEDROOM (BUNKHOUSE) IS ONLY AVAILABLE WARMER MONTHS (usually July and August only). It is a separate building and has no heat nor bathroom. During July and August, the Frisky Fish and Boathouse sleeps SIX total. All other times, the cottage alone sleeps only four.
Watch the lobster boats come and go and unload their catch, directly from the front yard of our tiny cottage.
The Frisky Fish is a unique and whimsical, squeaky-clean, and very comfortable home.
Although the main cottage is petite, it doesn’t take itself too seriously — it’s fun and has the feel of an open and airy beach house with a
great room with a soaring ceiling and giant windows. There is a full kitchen with a full size fridge, stove and dishwasher and plenty of cooking tools.
The first floor also has a bedroom with a queen sleigh bed with memory foam mattress and first floor full bath across the hall with washer and dryer.
The second floor loft master bedroom has a king bed with pillow-top mattress and half-bath.
During warmer months (usually only July/Aug/Sept), the rental includes use of the boathouse if you should want to use it (however, our occupancy can never exceed SIX due to town regulations). There are three twin beds, lots of board games, outdoor games, a television, mini-fridge, and it’s just a darn cute place to spend some time. There is, however, NO plumbing so no bathroom out there and no heat either.
The Frisky Fish is approximately 8 miles from the town of Machias with a grocery store, restaurants including the famous, Helens, known for their delicious blueberry pie , The French Cellar – a wine and cheese store, Whole Live Natural Foods & Cafe, etc. The nearest lobster pound is just around the corner and over the hill or visit “Mother Shuckers Lobsters” in Roque Bluffs on your way home from a day at the state park and sandy beach.
Bucks Harbor is the tidal working fishing/lobstering village in the town of Machiasport, Maine. You will hear the chug-chug-chug of the boats in the harbor and the caw of the gulls. Both across the water and sometimes, just across the street, you might hear the bahhh of sheep or the moo of a cow (or some fiddle music from across the water).
The Frisky Fish is also just under a mile to the world famous Jasper Beach with it’s melodious and unique music from the waves hitting the rocks. A must not miss experience. For swimming, the best bet is Roque Bluffs State Park which is a short drive away and offers both a sandy ocean beach and also a fresh water lake.
Although the Frisky Fish is in a village, at this time there aren’t any stores or restaurants in Bucks Harbor. The nearest town is Machias, where you can find a grocery, wine and cheese store, natural food cafe, the world famous Helens restaurant and other shops.
